Description: A great meal and a great sleep... Local food and proper pillows, that's what we do at the Greyhound. It's a centuries old coaching inn set in an ancient Thomas Hardy village so pretty it takes your breath away. Think of soft, rounded chalk hills, watercress farms, thatched cottages and a trout stream running through then double it and you get Sydling St Nicholas. Add in crisp white sheets, fluffy towels, free wi-fi everywhere and officially the best pub food in Dorset (two Good Pub Guide Awards) and you get the perfect English pub with rooms. We don't call it a boutique pub with rooms but others have so we're not complaining. And all in Dorset's loveliest village. This is 'real' England. Sydling St Nicholas is recorded in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book written in 1086. A collection of pastel painted houses built from flint and stone, it lies in a valley a mile off the main A37 Dorchester to Yeovil road and every route in to our village is chocolate box pretty. There are no street lights so the night sky is carbon black, walk off dinner literally under moonlight or take the torch from your bedroom.

Enjoyed a dinner here (pre-booked) on a Saturday night. Due to Covid restrictions, the capacity of the restaurant was reduced but the menu, especially the daily specials, was still extensive and exciting. The staff were friendly and polite and the food was brilliant. There is a large patio/terrace area outside at the front. We really enjoyed ourselves. I imagine that under 'normal conditions', this place must be absolutely jumping with diners wanting to eat here and that the small car-park out front could be tricky to navigate.

We were told about this place on a visit to maiden Newton , very professional staff fully covid prepared, attentive and polite .
My starter off the specials board was gorgeous and the other half’s pate was just as nice . The mains of ribeye steak with garlic butter and fries was cooked to perfection and the other half’s home made faggots with mash and cabbage was demolished as was the starters , we finished off with ice cream and a fruit crumble with vanilla custard this place is a hidden gem

Stopped here for a drink at lunchtime. Sadly the restaurant was closed but the gentleman at the bar was very friendly, as was the only local present, so we spent a very enjoyable hour there. Highly recommended.

I visited the Greyhound last week with my partner and my parents for lunch. The pub itself is beautifully decorated. The restaurant was cosy and inviting. The level of service was excellent, the staff were knowledgeable, attentive and displayed a good awareness of COVID safety. There was a standard reduced menu, but there were a large number of specials available on the board. Every meal was generously proportioned and delicious. We had a variety of starters and everybody had the lasagne for main. Very impressed with this restaurant and will definitely be coming again.

Just a one night stay with breakfast and evening meal. Outstanding dinner of calves liver, which isn't easy to get right. Breakfast was of the, "anything you like variety". Staff service was outstanding, always prepared to engage and listen, with passion shown for the business. Value for this stay was excellent. It was a busy weekend all over the region, but unlike some chain hotels that double their prices at these times, The Greyhound charges the same regardless. Count yourself lucky if you can get in here.
