We had a lovely 4 night break at 'The Balmoral'. Kind polite welcome and our room was ready on arrival, it was a 'cosy double', although small it was well furnished by good quality matching wardrobe, 4 drawer unit and bedside cupboards, a very comfortable bed, tea and coffee including a teapot, unit, lovely view across the lawned and well maintained garden. Public sitting areas with very comfortable sofas and chairs bar area with seating areas. The dining room was in period and table settings were very carefully laid out and not an item of cutlery out of place and laid out in the proper manner. The dining room staff all had a good sense of humour and had time to talk to the guests and I believe many guests were returning ones. It is a quieter style hotel and all the better for it in my opinion. Wine with dinner was at a very reasonable price. We stayed half board and found breakfast offerings very good and evenings meals had a full menu change each day and the choice was good and the food cooked and presented perfectly as any too quality restaurant would. Beautiful garden and well maintained lawns, with seating and relaxing sun chairs also. Although in a slightly hilly walk to Torquay centre (about 20 munutes' there is a bus stop right outside the hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay there again and would recommend it without reservation.

David.

Only good thing about this hotel was the comfy bed.

We booked for the 2 nights with dinner package.

The reviews online and the blurb on website were encouraging BUT

The meal was pre cooked and reheated, the veg were frozen. When I was asked how our meal was nothing was said when I replied “adequate”

Breakfast:
* coffee was Luke warm, sausages cheap and nasty

* menu says “help yourself to fruit juice” - you don’t

* table clothes upside down

One of our windows wouldn’t stay open, had to prop open with cushions.

On the hottest night of the year so far, we were unable to turn off the towel radiator!

None of which is a disaster BUT it detracted massively from our experience so much so we cancelled our 2nd night.

Tired and run down, lacks attention to detail. Would never stay here again

My wife and I traveled to Torquay from Canada and it was our first stay at the Hotel Balmoral. We absolutely loved it. We were sad to leave. The staff are funny, helpful, kind, and the hotel itself is one of the coziest, most nicely designed and appointed places we've stayed. The location is perfect for access to and view of the beautiful Meadfoot Beach and the surrounding area. Great room - spacious and all the right things to make it comfortable and feel at home. The food in the hotel restaurant was some of the best we had on our holiday in England. So much so that we ate almost every meal at the hotel restaurant. We never do that! Except for this time. Food quality was so high and the environment so nice to be in that we couldn't help ourselves. Also very much enjoyed the design and atmosphere of the hotel bar. And the drawing room and the grounds. Felt like a really well run family establishment. The sister of the owner helped my wife find some important items in town after we lost some stuff in London. Just another small example of how all the pieces fit together nicely at this place. Didn't want to leave. Will be back someday we hope.

We had a lovely weekend stay and were happy with our room, the facilities were good, although no lift to the upper floors, which is fine if you’re fit. Had dinner one night in the restaurant and it was delicious and arrived quickly. Staff very friendly and it has a homely atmosphere. The garden is really nice with lots of places to sit with tables and sun umbrellas. We sat one afternoon with drinks from the bar, rather than going to a noisy bar in town. If you do walk into town it’s up and down some hilly streets. Recommend the Cliff top walk into town.

Room tip: Parking sometimes limited but can park in the road opposite

My partner and i have stayed at this hotel about 6 or 7 times. Always been a wonderful stay and it has been good value.
. Sadly this time it was different. First we paid £185 per night half board which i thought was way overpriced for this hotel. No entertainment at all. Room was smelly and very hot and grubby.
When we went down to dinner one evening. One of the serving staff was rude and seemed to have negative attitude. (fed up to be there) and tutted when i asked for next course as had been waiting. She also has this sarcastic laugh which is annoying and embarrassing.
As a result we have booked somewhere else for August. Not sure if we will be back anymore. Such a shame
Must finish by saying thank you to Rachael here who is lovely and has always made us feel welcome at the balmoral.
