As always, a wonderful place to chill out. Views from hotel magnificent and gardens a true delight.
Happy with all services apart from long wait in breakfast room due to COVID 19 restrictions and not enough staff. Ended up having to get up earlier and earlier to beat the queue.

I stayed at the Imperial in 1998 as a fresh-faced 23-year-old been sent to a conference 6 months into my first job. Back then it was a proper 5* hotel on the English Riviera. I was looking for somewhere to stay for a weekend to celebrate a special birthday for my wife and booked 2 nights at £399 inc parking so room rate was £385 for 2 nights or £192.50 per night.

This hotel is now so tired, it clearly has not had any investment in the last 22 years. We arrived and there were hardly any parking spaces left and a queue of people at reception trying to find out where to park, we had managed to squeeze our car into a tiny space and climbed out of one of the rear doors!

The receptionist was stressed by the complaints and questions so the service was not as nice as it could have been.

We went up to our standard double room, I would definitely pay the extra for a sea view room as ours had an ugly view of the car park. I say a view" but the windows were caked with scum on the outside you could not see much outside.

The room had been cleaned to a good a standard though, and we were never concerned about how they were coping with Covid-19.

The furniture in the room was old and the bed was in need of a new mattress it was very soft and uncomfy. The TV, kettle and iron all worked though. It seemed to me that the hotel was trying to save money, there was only a bottle of shampoo, shower gel and a body cream, when you book for 2 people you expect at least 2 bottles of each per room and where was the hair conditioner? There were no biscuits with the tea and coffee.

We went to have dinner in the restaurant but there was only one veggie option (always a risotto) so we opted for the more self-service bar menu. The service at the bar was excellent they coped well with working under challenging circumstances of a declining hotel and covid restrictions.

In the morning we thought we would treat ourselves to the hotel breakfast for the extra £15 per head, that's right the £192.50 per night was not enough to include breakfast. Good job we hadn't added it as the queue was so long to get into the breakfast room we would not have eaten until lunch. We walked 5 mins to the cafe on the marina called Below Decks which was superb.

It is really sad to see such a decline from a 5* best old style hotel in Devon to this. The Imperial may have been downgraded to a 4* but if you are going to charge £200 per night you need to provide better rooms and better service. What would be great is for one of the high quality chains like hotel du vin to take over this splendid building and turn it back in to a proper 5-star destination.

When you pay for a deluxe room, you expect a deluxe room. However, what we got was poor room quality, service, and an amazing view, so I guess, we paid for the view.

Shower pressure produced barely a trickle, which we complained about on first day, we were told maintenance would be informed to take a look the following morning, nothing happened so we mentioned it the following evening and lady apologised as she expected something to be done. However, on check out, we were told that this is a problem on the 4th floor with no offer of any compensation. So beware if you are booking a deluxe room and get the 4th floor.

Pre ordered a fridge for the room for my wife’s medication, which did not arrive and received no communication to say it was not available.

Fortunately, we had purchased a portable fridge so had it covered.

Food Quality is good, but service is woefully slow. They will probably blame the current COVID regulations, but we stayed in four different hotels over the past eight days and had no similar issues with the other hotels.

Rooms are quite tired and could do with significant investment/upgrades.

Very dated rooms,
Breakfast was a disaster we waited around thirty minutes to be seated, thirty minutes to have our drinks order taken this was only after asking three times,
One hour thirty for breakfast is not good this did not include the wait to get in!

Excellent stay, certainly worth paying for a room with a balcony and sea view, lovely terraces to sit outside, and nice pool. Drinks are rather expensive at the bar but nothing more than you d expect.Nice for a weekend break
