Amazing historic building. We must help to support these beautiful buildings, they bring history to life and make it so understandable that people come from all over the world.

The building is very big and we were disappointed that it seemed a lot of money that had to be paid to enter, not just a donation, also the day we visited it was cordoned off inside as the school was going to hold some sort of service, but what we could see was lovely. The gardens next to it went down to the marina, so we walked through them.

We had a good visit - lots to see and the lantern tour was really interesting. However the first impression was poor - the west porch was full of feathers and pigeon muck. I know it's an ongoing problem but there were 2 volunteer welcomes on the door doing very little and with a broom and 5 minutes they could have made the entrance acceptable. I was also disappointed at the cables, extension leads, TVs cluttering certain parts of the cathedral- the extension housing the fabulous Priors' door is little more than a store room. With a bit of tidying up this really would be a first-class experience.

Too much to say about this magical place. The soaring columns of the nave, the glories of the wooden lantern high above the crossing, the folk art of the Prior's Gate. Come on a Sunday: it's free, but do make a donation; and you may chance on a service. We stayed for the service to bless the animals, informal and welcoming.A gem that rewards many visits.

There are plants of reviews on the beauty of this place, of the history, the architecture, the art and the music. But it really is as simple as this.
Ely Cathedral makes me smile - every time I see it. It never fades. As you approach the city the cathedral rises up from the fens and it is stunning. Close up even more so.
