We went with friends & had a great evening. The food was very good & the waiting staff friendly. It wasn’t quite as good as we’d expected with all the hype of the name & of course it was pretty expensive.
We also felt it was too noisy, the wooden floor not helping this of course.
Will we be back? I’m not sure.

Very polite and well-trained staff, a very wide and varied menu (maybe too varied?) and a good if expensive wine list. The food was very enjoyable, atmosphere good and we had a very nice lunch.

Let’s be honest, there are three reasons to visit the Ivy in the suburbs; you can’t get a table at West Street, you’re happy to pay premium prices for good quality food and service or you’re a bit of a snob. We meet two of those criteria.

Rolling out their successful restaurant concept to the suburbs is a seemingly risky concept but it appears to be working from a restaurant visitors point of view; food and service standards are high and the cachet of “The Ivy” gets the punters through the door.

We visited on a very quiet Monday afternoon and despite the hostess going through the farce of “checking” to see if we were able to sit at the bar (the place was virtually empty and there was no one sat at the bar) this is a tactic used by successful restaurants to continue the mirage of exclusivity.

If you’re concerned and fretting about menu prices then the Ivy isn’t for you; you’re probably better off at Nando’s. I’m sure Cambridge has a branch somewhere to make sure it adheres to the continuing homogenisation of the UK high street.

The menu on offer here is imaginative and comfortably reassuring; staples of Shepherds Pie (obviously), fish and chips alongside monkfish and prawn curry. And everything we ordered was beautifully presented and of the highest quality. As you’d expect.

Their dress code is “smart casual” but folks wearing shorts (no football colours or scruffy buggers basically) are welcome which is fortuitous seeing as the sun was shining and the outside temperature was in the 80’s so the air conditioning was most welcoming.

I’m sure this place is packed most evenings and weekends (it’s a big place and will have enormous overheads) but even when virtually empty their standards don’t slip.

One small criticism: the barman needed to be more observant and pay attention to the small details. This is what determines the difference between a good restaurant and an excellent one.

If you’re in Cambridge do yourself a favour and give the usual tourist traps a wide berth and treat yourself to an excellent meal in pleasant surroundings. And don’t fret about the prices; quality costs.

I was taken to The Ivy for a birthday bash. What a treat, the whole experience was excellent. The staff friendly and attentive, the menu varied and the food superbly cooked and delicious. I loved the tempura prawns. All five of our party were very happy with the evening and will certainly be returning.
