Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens and National Historic Site of Canada started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access, Food available for purchase, Bathroom facilities, Activities for young children, Lockers / storage

On our last 2days of our tour we stayed in Vancouver & one of the highlights of our tour was The Butchart Gardens. We took a BC ferry from vancouver ferry terminal & arrived Victoria island &in a comfort vehicle we took a short ride to reach Butchart Gardens.Amazed to see and stroll along flowers lined paths. At the entrance itself there were very diffent kind of flowers and everyone stopped &clicked photos at the entrance itself.there were many themed gardens and masterful landscaping. One of them which i liked was the Japanese gardens.there were tulips, roses, lavender, lilly, etc etc u name and u see it. There were also gift shop at the entrance of the garden and many people in our group shopped souvenirs as a remembrance from the beautiful Butchart gardens. In the evening we joined the ferry back to return to the hotel.

talk about doing something good for where you live! turning a used up quarry into a beautiful garden is something to behold! From fountains to Sequoias to roses, there's something for everyone to "oh & ah" about.

I'd suggest you eat before you go. food is pricey and not very tasty.

This is truly a wonderful place to visit, and our visit in May yielded some beautiful sights. The story behind The Butchart Gardens is interesting enough, but the plants and flowers and landscaping are unbelievable. We wished we had more time to stroll about the gardens, but our return to Vancouver via the Prince of Whales boat beckoned. Next time we'll definitely devote more time to this gem of a place.

If you want a place to take a few selfies with a colourful backdrop, mainly of endless bedding plants, buy souvenirs in the huge giftshop and have a coffee and cake, but you're not really interested in gardening, then this is for you. If you'd like a well designed garden with a lovely atmosphere, character and wildlife, go somewhere else, like Tofino Botanical garden. Butchart is a victim of its own success. It's between the ferry port and Victoria, so handy for all the tours, and ALL the tours come here. We walked round shoulder to shoulder, we sat down and tried to wait until the rush died down. It didn't. Just an endless stream of tour groups. You can't stop to look because people are pushing you out the way to take selfies. Not a pleasant experience. The restaurant is fine, but the giftshop heaving with assistants who follow you round and try to 'connect' with you. There are better things to do on the island.
