Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Completed in 1890, Craigdarroch is a stately home built by the pioneering couple Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, who at the time of its construction were the wealthiest people in British Columbia. Called a 'castle' due to its imposing exterior, the luxurious interior has been restored to look as though the visitor is a guest of Mrs. Dunsmuir during the 1890s. It features beautiful woodwork, unique Victorian artifacts, and an impressive collection of original stained glass, all within a pleasant walk from downtown Victoria.

Very interesting place. We only remained outside and took photo’s but the architecture for photos is beautiful. It’s odd that it is in a residential area but worth the visit.

I had not read anything about the “Castle” before so everything was new information. The best aspect of doing the tour was the volunteer tour guides. We had spoken to at least four guides and each one knew so much about the house and the families who lived there. Their stories and information about the artifacts was captivating. Plan on spending at least an hour or two in this historic building.

I have always wanted to see this Castle and I finally did it two days ago, the woodwork
is so very intricate, and makes the rooms look so rich and gorgeous.

Make sure you take time to look at the fireplaces each one has a different pattern and
really each is a wonderful work of art.

Many of the windows have stained glass decorations inserted at the top of the windows, they are truly beautiful pieces of art, wildflower, geometric patterns etc and lovely colors

There is steep staircases for each floor, with lovely carved bannisters, so it is a good workout for tourists lol

Entry cost was $ 14.00 for adults and very reasonable and the people who work there are very well informed so don't hesitate to ask them questions about the home and the Dunsmuir family who lived there.

A great tour for those rainy days and the exterior is beautiful to take the time and look at all the features

Did not know what to expect. Thoughfully presented but some rooms a bit too cluttered. The tablet for info did not want to work in many rooms. Pity so much damage done during hospital times. The place can only get better as rooms are upgraded and new items placed. Not to be missed when in Victoria.
