Table of twelve, set dinner menu plus a couple more dishes, enlarge soup portion, great amount of food and virtually no MSG. For a Chinese restaurant especially a vegan one, is virtually impossible to get away with MSG.
Reasonably priced, delicious, great service. Including gratuities less than C$18 per person. Definitely will recommend and return.

Our vegan hostess suggested the Po Kong Vegetarian Restaurant, and we jumped at the chance to try a Chinese restaurant that specialized in dishes without meat. The restaurant is very near the corner of Kingsway and Knight, and only a short block from Kingsway & King Edward (25th Avenue) which made it really convenient to get from our house on the west side of Vancouver. Amazingly, there is still free street parking on Kingsway, right in front of the restaurant.

We arrived just before our 6 p.m. reservation, and there was already quite a line up to get in. We didn't have to wait long to get a table, but it was busy the whole time. Always a good sign.

As we perused the menu, we watched a parade of heaping plates of food going to tables around us, including one large table with three Buddhist monks and others whom we assumed to be family. That pretty well clinched it; this was the place to eat vegan...and enjoy it.

We let our hostess order, and she said, "Since this your first time at Po Kong, I've ordered some of the highlights off their menu." As there were six of us, she ordered six dishes for a good sampling, but it was almost too much food. Everything she ordered was delicious, and came at a nice pace so we could have a good tasting of the dish before the next plate arrived.

We particularly enjoyed the Orange Cutlet, the Tofu Eggplant, the Spicy Green Beans, and the sizzling-hot Chow Mein with Vegetables. Both the Tasty Fresh Shitake Mushrooms and the Bean Curd Rolls in Spicy Black Bean Sauce were very good when they arrived hot from the kitchen, but the sauces thickened into a rather unsavoury gluey paste as they cooled.

We also ordered white rice, and the restaurant brought out a complimentary plate of freshly baked butter cookies and candied cashews for a yummy, sweet finish. For our introduction to a vegetarian eating place, it was a total success. Food was delicious, filling, and we really didn't miss the meat...all for $20 per person, including the tip!

Better selection of dishes and better customer service compared to a similar restaurant across the road from it.
Would not be fair to recommend any particular dish, as all are good.

This is an amazing little restaurant with the best Chinese vegetarian food I’ve tasted outside of Hong Kong and Singapore. Whether you are a vegetarian or not, this is simply too good to miss. It’s a fair hike as this restaurant is in Burnaby, which is not exactly downtown Vancouver. The service is friendly, if a bit haphazard, but who cares when the dishes are innovative, of excellent quality and well cooked. Reservation is a must as this place is busy. Do not confuse this restaurant with New Po Kong which is a rival restaurant on the other side of the road, trading on diners making a mistake on the name. There’s limited parking in a small car park at the back.
