Jasmine Flower Shanghai Cuisine

There are 4 tight fitting parking stalls in the rear. Be certain to hit an ATM 'cause like many Chinese restaurants CASH ONLY is the practice. I can't remember specifically what we ordered but my recollection is that the Jasmine Flower gives a poor representation of Shanghai cuisine. I think that it will be a while before we patronize this restaurant again.

Friends are so right that this is a sleeper restaurant. Not much to look at the Xiao Long Bao and the other dishes are tasty, Reservations taken and could be helpful at busy times. Otherwise get here early for good Shanghainese. Staff friendly and speak both Catonese and Mandaring. Well priced, 2 people for $35...Good luck and enjoy!

Sheng Jian Bao (SJB) is the heavy brethren of the more delicate and more ubiquitous Xiao Long Bao. It is filled with pork and soup, steamed and then pan-fried like port stickers to create the deliciously crusty bottom. Jasmine Flower makes one of the best in Vancouver. In this unassuming restaurant in Marpole specializing in Shanghainese cuisine, you can see the workers literally making the SJB in a corner of the room. The lighting here is harshly bright white (like many neighborhood restaurants in China) - but you just have to focus on the food. And the food is good. A beef sandwich roll with thin pancake is flavorful and tender. The tea-smoked duck is salty and smoky, perfect for the accompanying steamed buns. A gloriously reddish "hong shao" pork butt is tender and juicy, with the fatty part just at the point of melting. It's large enough to feed 4 to 6 people. Order some "flower buns" to mop up the sweet sauce. But you are here for the SJB. The skin is just thick enough to hold the hot soup inside and allow for a wonderful crust to be formed at the bottom. Biting into one requires some practice lest the hot juicy would squirt all over. (You eat with both a spoon and chopsticks). In a neighborhood without many other Chinese restaurants, this is a gem worth seeking out from any part of Greater Vancouver.

The restaurant is clean and the menu covers the usual spectrum expected for this type of cuisine. The fried rick cakes turned out to be lack lustre. It is a "cash only" restaurant.

The Jasmine Flower occupies the location previously used by the Two Brothers Chinese Restaurant. The premises are somewhat cleaner but nothing else has changed much. I found nothing remarkable with either the service, food or prices.
