This was our first time in Ixtapa and we really liked it. The beach has some of the nicest sand to walk on, the water and air temperatures were perfect, the beach was exceptionally clean, the ocean was crystal clear and fun to be in and it is very close to town.
Barcelo Ixtapa is a beautiful hotel. The Sea View Rooms all have fantastic views. It is clean, the food is good, and the beverages in the Premier Lounge were top shelf. We are top level Grupo Barcelo Loyalty members and have stayed at many Barcelo, Occidental, Allegro and even one Royal Hideaway Resorts. They all have some similarities but each is different which we like. We have been upgrading to the Premium (or Royal ) Level. Sometimes we think the upgrade is worth the cost. Other times we don't. This time we are indecisive. They had a very nice lounge but it was by reception instead of on the top floor with a view like other places. The Lounge had very nice appetizers but no Premium Restaurant like other Premium Upgrades. The liquor was top shelf with 6 different 12 year old Scotch and 11 different Tequilas (including Patron anejo)
We were 2 of only 6 Americans we saw at the resort. Everyone else seemed to be from Mexico as Mexico City is only a 7 hour drive from Ixtapa. We like that because the locals that come to these resorts usually speak English and we get to talk to them but during these fearful times, everyone is afraid to speak to someone they don't know. And wearing masks all the time makes communication even more difficult.
The other reason we cannot rate the resort excellent is because they are restricted in the number of guests they can have (and they were far below that number) so they can't provide the services they would normally have. For example, the restaurants were open on a rotating basis. On Tuesday night, the main buffet was closed so you had a choice of the Mexican or Italian Restaurant. The ala cart snack bar and bar were open only on the weekend. They had shows only on Friday and Saturday nights when they were much busier than during the week. On the plus side, there were plenty of chairs and the service was excellent. They also have to comply with the government regulations which means they cannot have buffets. All the food is behind glass and the staff must serve you so you wait in lines like in a cafeteria. It is inconvenient to wander around and take a little bit of this and a little bit of that and then come back and get more of something you like. Also because of the low number of guests, they don't have the selection that I think they would usually have. The food was very good and the appetizers in the Premium lounge were excellent. We look forward to coming back when the Resort is fully operational.

Our vacation at Barcelo Ixtapa was excellent! The all-inclusive cost was very affordable for the quality and variety of food and premium label drinks. Our Premium bracelet allowed for use of VIP check-in, lounge, premium label bar and extra customer service. Joshua and Marcelo treated us like royalty every time we hang out at the Premium Lounge with our favorite Don Julio 70 & Jonny Walker Gold Label; had specialty snacks in a very relax VIP setting. Roció made sure we had the best seat at each show and lunch restaurants. Captain Alejandro Torres ensure our reservations to their specialty restaurants were a VIP experience ever time even when booked at capacity. Alejandro made sure each of our desserts read “happy anniversary!” Alondra in Concierge ensured our Anniversary Romantic Dinner was prepared as described in brochure. It was a very beautiful lobster candlelight dinner in the gazebo with wine, champagne and more desserts! Our dinner waiter JoseLuis treated with superb customer service. Waiter Alexander also did a superb job at ever meal. The Zumba instructor & Annie in Aqua Aerobics had me working out to very fun music & moves! The staff are a 5 star, but hotel needs an update thus our overall 4 rating. Premium drinks shall be available at shows. We truly enjoyed our time at Barcelo Ixtapa! We will definitely be back!

My wife and I had the pleasure of spending 10 nights at the Barcelo Ixtapa this past October. This is our 27th consecutive year visiting what use to be the Sheraton Ixtapa.

The Resort did an excellent job with the appropriate safety related COVID precautions.

The Resort sits on the prime location of Playa Palmar which provides beautiful colorful sunsets and lovely views of the Bay.

Service was exceptional and Food was excellent. The specialty restaurants were impressive and a great way to spend the evening.

Miguel Lopez and his Team make every effort to ensure an enjoyable vacation! Aplaudimos a un personal tan bueno y carinoso!

We look forward to a quick return!

My wife and I recently returned from our 6 year anniversary celebration at Barcelo Ixtapa. We cannot say enough wonderful tings about Barcelo Ixtapa! The resort has excellent COVID safety protocols (masks, hand sanitizer, and social distancing). Our oceanview room was clean and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the waterfall shower in the bathroom. Service throughout the resort was 5 star. Food at the buffets and specialty restaurants was delicious. The pools were crystal clear, warm, and inviting. There are plenty on lounge chairs poolside and underneath the shady palm trees on El Palmar Beach. We loved early morning walks on the beach. Recently hatched baby turtles were crawling from the coco sand beach to the ocean. At night, mama turtles swam ashore, laid their eggs, and then returned to the sea. Yoga classes at 10AM. Zumba classes at 11AM. Water aerobics at 12PM. Funny games at 1PM. Water volleyball at 3PM. Fabian and Any, the Entertainment Team, were so fun and welcoming. From El Palmar Beach, you can parasail, jet ski, and enjoy banana boat rides. We enjoyed beautiful sunsets every evening. Nothing but good times and complete relaxation! We can't wait to go back to Ixtapa someday. Muchas gracias to the wonderful team at Barcelo Ixtapa for a fantastic, memorable anniversary celebration!!!

Room tip: Upgrade to an oceanview room for amazing views and cool breezes, and enjoy listening to the waves crashing on El Palmar beach.

Went to Barcelo Resort last week. Flew into Mexico through Mexico City, Stayed a couple of nights there, and then a quick flight to Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa. Took a shuttle from the Airport to the resort ($300 for two people plus luggage). Arrived and they did not have the room ready, but offered the lunch to get settled and then the room was ready ($175 per/night/for 2 people, all inclusive). They tried to upsell, but the accommodations could not have been any better. The pool, the staff, the food, the location, everything was perfect.
Mexico is a lot more vigilant about their COVID precautions than the US. Everyone who worked with the public in any way wore masks and shields. Temps were taken at every entrance, some took temps both going and coming. Tables were sanitized before (sometimes during) and after meals. I have never seen Mexico cleaner! The hotel in Mexico City had a security seal on the door that verified that it had been sanitized.
The airports ran very smoothly. Uber worked fine in Mexico City, but not at all in Zihu/Ixtapa. I used to live in Mexico. 2007-2012. I've been all over the country. I love the Pacific coast. Ixtapa is a big secret. I understand why there are not very many comments on here about it.
