This hotel is in the tradition of the grand European hotels. The lobby is stunning: it has a vaulted ceiling a with a stained glass skylight. The rooftop restaurant has an incredible view of the cathedral and the plaza. In good weather it is open air.

Thank you for taking the time to write this comment. We could not feel happier to know that you had such a good experience in the Gran Hotel Ciudad de México. Started with the room not properly cleaned long black hairs in the bathtub and used soap on the soap holder. Then We were told that their system was not working right and that we could not use a credit card on file. That means when you purchase anything including the breakfast buffet we had to have individual charges. There were protest outside our window early one morning! We had stayed at the Regis the week before so the service was mediocre. The rooms are old not historic old just ugly. The dining on the terrace was the highlight of the stay there. The smog is very bad there especially this part of Mexico city. Think crowded like NYC times 3 population wise. They say they are a 5 star property the service was more a 3 star. The food on the buffet while not bad did not rack 5 star in anyway! Go take photos do not stay there.

My wife and I spend 2 nights in this very beautiful grand hotel situated in the heart of the Zócalo. We were greeted with a glass of Champagne, shown to our spacious and comfortable room by Jaime who throughout our stay made us feel welcomed, and provided very helpful recommendations. (Thank you.)
Unexpectedly as we settled in our room we found a plate of biscuits and fruit with my name written in chocolate. (Who does not want to see his/her name in chocolate?)
The hotel is perfectly located for visiting the historic center of the city, Palacio Nacional (Diego Rivera Murals), Cathedral, Bellas Artes Palace, numerous museums, and very colorful streets.
The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast restaurant staff were a little aloof. The terrace restaurant overlooking the Zócalo was beautiful, but a bit too expensive.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay, and will come back again. We need another ride on the first elevator ever installed in Mexico City!

Alejandro and Lazaro provided spectacular service. The service in general was great and the food was delicious! The view at night was wonderful and the weather was perfect for dining out in the terrace. Apparently, this location was used to film one of the James Bond movies. We learned this from Alejandro who was kind enough to share the history of the hotel.

Highly recommend!
