Jonty and Sarah are wonderful hosts and create a great atmosphere on the island. This truly is getting away from it all and being unable to access a phone signal or wifi was refreshing. Shepherds' Cottage is isolated, peaceful and has a fantastic view. It is very comfortable but is off grid and you do need some survival skills we found in order to cope. We enjoyed the challenge! Great for dogs. We saw lots of wildlife, even golden eagles. We would recommend the summit walk and canoeing to Shoe Bay but every day was perfect in its own way. Come prepared for ticks and for cold nights! Gas lights weren't bright enough for reading but we didn't need them with the long Scottish days and head torches.

Ultimate retreat for peace and nature. An amazing place to just be with nature and away from it all. Lots of hiking, trips to the beach, swimming, wildlife spotting, cooking and open fires. An amazing place and I am sure we will go back. The cottage is basic but has everything and is comfortable. We stayed a week but could have easily stayed a month!

Sarah, Jonty, guys and girls treated us like royalty. Nothing too much trouble.
Cottage clean and if a little rudimentary comfortable to stay in for the week.
The beauty is that there's no TV, WiFi or mobile coverage, well, almost none. Mobile weak if you walk around and intermittent WiFi in the 'Village Hall'.
So stoke up the stove. add a glass, (or two), of wine and sit back to wait for the Pine Martens to come for their supper.

From the moment we met Jonty and Sarah on the jetty at Dorlin Pier, we knew we were on for a great adventure. For a week, we followed the trails, enjoyed the peace and quiet and the stunning countryside. It's the sort of place you can totally forget the troubles of the world and switch off. Our cottage was toasty, and well equipped, and we even managed a bracing swim at the beautiful Shoe Bay, picnic and bottle of wine to hand. This is a place for stout boots, waterproofs and a sense of adventure. We were very happy, and the island did not disappoint. Don't expect wifi - which is actually a great bonus at the moment. We will be back in the Spring so see the island flora and fauna in a different season. And I will never forget the eerie sound of the stags in the rutting season echoing across the island and from the mainland. My camera is full of the best photos I've ever taken . Thank you to all those who made our stay so special!

Dear Sue many thanks for your wonderful comments and great to hear that you took advantage of all the walks, views, tranquility and all the other sights and sounds the island has to offer...even down to the stags who at last seem to be sated!
We look forward to welcoming on to the island again next spring and thanks again for being such wonderful guests.

Great remote setting - deer on the doorstep so in October you can witness the rut up close. Despite being late in the season saw a good range of birds and found some Otter scat if not the otters themselves. Old school house is a spacious, light and unique property. Heating, hot water and gaslighting worked well making it very comfortable though off grid. Didn’t miss the absent phone/internet connectivity one bit. Lovely boat trip to shoe bay on a surprisingly sunny day and lots of walks around the island providing different views round every corner.
Sarah & Jonny have just taken over the manager role but they and their team couldn’t be more cheerful, helpful and keen to get it right for every visitor.
Be prepared though - Old School House is ~2miles along the North Shore Track which is fairly rocky in sections and the other walks are also proper scrambles not walks in the park. And after a few rainy days some can get very boggy in places. Shoe Bay beach is gorgeous with views of the small isles but requires a hop from the boat into knee high water. So if you want to get all the island has to offer, come prepared and with reasonable agility.

Dear Birgit it was wonderful to welcome you both on to Eilean Shona. Shoe Bay is always spectacular but on a sunny day and with a low tide is even more amazing (and a piggy back to dry land a service we were happy to provide!) ...and the seals for company! It's true that the walks can be challenging but the rewards are plentiful from the views to the wildlife.
We do hope you come back to see us...
