We stayed in unit 15D which had great views of both Cruz Bay and St. Thomas from a generously sized balcony. The unit was spacious and had an updated full kitchen that was generously stocked with water, juice and coffee that we made good use of for nearly half of our meals during the week. The resort is just far enough away from Cruz Bay that you aren't in the middle of the noise but still only a 3 minute walk from the ferry (perfect)! The 2 level unit is more like a home stocked with things like a cooler (that we used every day) an iron and plenty of high end soaps/shampoos, ect. We ate our first night at the onsite restaurant and enjoyed our meal tremendously and especially enjoyed the views. Our kids made full use of the onsite pool and enjoyed snorkeling along the beach and especially enjoyed the peacocks and other wildlife wandering about the well maintained grounds. All of the staff were pleasant and helpful. I think this is your best option if you want to be within walking distance of Cruz Bay.

Room tip: The upper level ocean views are really hard to beat but they go for a nice premium

On an impromptu "let's just get away" kind of vacation, we stumbled across the gallows. The pictures online were beautiful but I must say we were blown away when we arrived. We stayed in unit 13 C which is an upper unit and has a harbour view. I could not get enough of the view! It truly was beautiful! The location of this place could not get any better. Walking distance to everything you need, and even a little store downstairs for everything you forgot! We bought bacon and eggs there and had breakfast everyday in our unit overlooking the beautiful harbor. Great place for any needed munchies also! All of the staff here ... from the front desk... to the convenience store... to the housekeeping ... was all top of the line! Everyone was so friendly and full of information about the island! And I MUST talk about the snorkeling! Right off the back of the property is a ramp with a ladder and a floating platform. This was some of the best snorkeling we did on the island!!! We saw so many coral formations, more fish than we saw anywhere, and we even were blessed to see a huge spotted eagle ray pass by us gracefully. The pool is small but the view from the pool/hot tub is second to none. Gallows is in the BEST spot on the island. It is worth every penny spent. We will be back!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I absolutely enjoyed my time in Saint John, I must say that, for the price, I expected more from Gallows. There are many great things about the resort, the grounds, the pool, the floating dock. But for the purposes of brevity, I'll focus on the disappointments.

One thing in particular that surprised me was the fact that each of the units is furnished and updated differently. Our unit (10c) was pretty run-down and dated, while the unit sharing our wall looked brand new (marble floors, granite, etc). Yet, we both paid the same price. This was a bit unsettling.

While the housekeeping staff were quite pleasant, they don't do the best job of making sure all the units have what they need upon guest arrival. For example, we had a fully stocked coffee station, but no coffee maker. I had to call the front desk twice to get them to send us one.

If you have more than one person in your unit, be sure to leave ample time between showers. The hot water heater is the size of a coke can and runs out after 10 minutes. Also, the water coming out of the tap is noticeably yellow. I'll drink tap water almost anywhere, but not this stuff.

The resort is located at the top of a very steep hill which you will certainly walk up a dozen times during your stay at Cruz Bay. While this wasn't an issue for me, it was definitely a concern for some of the older folks traveling with us. Gallows shares one of the sides of its property with an above ground cemetery, which is both creepy and interesting at the same time. But if you get creeped out by that kind of thing, just be aware.

All in all, Gallows is a charming resort but with glaring areas for improvement.

Room tip: All the units are individually owned and are not all the same. Avoid 10C

Our second trip to Gallows Point- This year with 2 kids- Great place for families. Walking distance to town, unit very well equipped, friendly staff. Stayed Harborside, a few nights were VERY noisy from bar in Cruz Bay. Will rent Oceanside next time due to noise concerns.

Room tip: Stayed Harborside. (12d) Upper levels are nice with deck. Amazing views

Didn't know what to expect since it was our first time in the Virgin Islands. What a surprise! GREAT location to the restaurants, bars, Jeep and snorkel rentals, and ferry dock. Extremely well maintained resort and very quiet. Staff was very friendly as well as the peacock that greeted us every morning for coffee on our patio! Will definitely be back!
