For the past few years, my family and I have taken our off-season vacation at the Paradisus resorts in Playa de Carmen, MX and Punta Cana, DR while exploring new locations during our high season vacation break. The advantage of returning to a familiar resort every year or two is knowing what to expect. And this familiarity certainly applies to some of the long-time staff who know you by name and treat you like royalty. An example is Sanson Santana who was manning his registration station when we arrived and greeted us like old friends, immediately taking care of several of our needs. We soon ran into our good friend Junior Martes, who patrols the beach and pool areas with a commitment to excellent customer service that is rarely duplicated today. For example, when your 10-year old runs at first sight to Junior for the hug, and Junior greets the boy by name, that is a special level of dedication and caring. We also made it a point to visit our old friend Starky Baloy at the Vento restaurant bar. I have heard many patrons exclaim that Starky is the best bartender in the Caribbean, and my wife and I certainly agree. This fine gentleman knows all the current fad drinks, old favorites, and even obscure classics. He’s a genuine world class mixologist who is entertaining and a good conversationalist. This fine gentleman knows all the current fad drinks, old favorites, and even obscure classics. He’s a genuine world class mixologist who is entertaining and a good conversationalist. We were also pleasantly surprised by a new friend we made on this trip, our Concierge Enrique Quinones. Enrique is a young professional, but polished and skilled well beyond his years. He attended to every detail of our daily itinerary from morning golf, to excursions, to fine dining reservations, and adroitly used a combination of personal presentations and social media (WhatsApp) to ensure thoroughness without being overbearing. As for the resort, it is the same well maintained all-inclusive with fine facilities, onsite golf course, and an abundance of onsite activities, local attractions, and excursions to keep any family relaxed and entertained. But we were a bit disappointed in one major aspect on this trip---the beach. The algae scourge had hit the island hard prior to and during our stay and there seems to be a limited commitment by the tourism authorities or the regional hoteliers to combat this phenomenon. For example none of the newer offshore catch technologies were in use and even the skimmers and beach crews were on hiatus during most of our trip. The result was a massive amount of rotting algae in growing piles on the entire strand of Bavaro regional beaches. This takes a huge component out of the resort’s equation, and certainly destroys the views. In fact, I would be hesitant to return if an advanced report indicated the algae levels were high and not being routinely remediated. Recommend you call and check on this prior to trip planning.More
