Some good aspects (welcome pack included cheese and crackers, cider and apple juice; lawn and courtyard; nicely furnished room) but let down by:
1. an underwhelming, quirky and limited breakfast. Only one choice of eggs (boiled), no interesting bread (rolls) to accompany the delicious ham just toast, coffee wasn't served in 'lashings' as promised on the website but in meagre amounts from what appeared to be a thermos jug into a thin glass pot that consequently cooled quickly, no cheese offered (as per website description) but did respond to a request (eventually) for some cheese which was fantastic when it came (Gorwydd Caerphilly I think by the taste of it). Would have preferred brioche to the croissant roll personally but again, seemed like take it or leave it. Website description offered juicES, but only one available on the counter.
The food that was provided as standard was perfectly acceptable other than being so limited.
2. Bathroom had little shelf space. It was inadequately ventilated so took ages for the mirror to clear. The toiletries provided were awful, with a body wash that had an unpleasant fragrance and didn't lather. Fortunately we had brought some of our own for the earlier part of our holiday.

My wife and I want to move permanently into Cottage One, and to eat every second night at Osip, with every other night being The Pharmacy, Osip's new little brother wine bar.
Bruton is beautiful, with some lovely boutiques and life-style shops. It also has the stunning Hauser & Wirth gallery and garden.
Number One is a perfectly designed, and beautifully decorated, hotel. Cottage One has a lovely sitting room downstairs, with a log fire. Upstairs we have a lovely bedroom, with hand made mattress, Egyptian cotton sheets, and a large bathroom with two sinks, excellent shower etc.
I have read some reviews that criticise the breakfast and the young staff. Our experience was quite the contrary. Breakfast was different to your average bed and breakfast, but delicious, and the admittedly young staff were enthusiastic, keen to please, and proud of working in such a gorgeous place.
If you value the finer things in life, you will love Number One, Osip and The Pharmacy.

This boutique hotel in the heart of Somerset is a real gem which is enhanced by its wonderful location. Everyone from the owners to the girls who delivered breakfast in the morning could not have been more helpful. You are made to feel at ease as soon as you arrive and that is no easy task in these difficult times. As we visited at the beginning of the week the Michelin * restaurant was not open but arrangements were made for guests to eat at the ‘Chapel’. Another great find.( see separate review)
I could go on about how No 1 and the small town of Bruton have helped me reconnect with the wonderful county of Somerset but I won’t . Well worth putting yourself out for!

Excellent hotel. Room was spacious and very new. Had a fridge with complementary Somerset cyder and some cheese which was lovely. Staff always polite and very helpful. Some reviews mention the breakfast which we thought was lovely. You get a croissant, butter, jam, granola, rice pudding, toast, ham and eggs. Ok it’s not a full English, if that’s what you want, but it’s all home made and for a light breakfast to start the day it’s perfect.

If we had just stayed and eaten at Number One perhaps my review would have been more favourable. Luckily for us there were other hotels/restaurants we experienced nearby that were far more pleasurable. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated and the rooms are individual and amusing. That said what makes an extra special hotel is not the rooms but the people and service one receives. Everyone was very polite, but just lacking in genuine warmth and concern for our well being. For example; no one to welcome us on arrival, breakfast served to us by what felt like a young public school girl who was doing us the favour of being there. The breakfast was not as bad as some have made out. The rice pudding was absolutely delicous, but no marmalade or even any honey to put on the very tart yoghurt that was offered. Staffing is a huge problem for the industry at the moment, but The Newt and Queens Arms at Corton Denham would knock the spots off this place in how they have trained their workforce to make one feel truly welcome.

Room tip: Don't go for any room at the front of the hotel, unless you are happy to sleep with windows closed. It is on a noisy junction.
