Owner description: Visitors can view recent excavations of this Roman fort built on Hadrian's Wall, while learning about its interesting 2,000-year history.

Being frustrated with the price for single entry into English Heritage sites we recently took the plunge for family meembership. We are now ticking off the list of "maybe" sites that previously didn't warrant the relatively high cost of a one day trip, Birdoswald being one. Unfortunately I must say I would be disappointed if I had paid single entry to get in.

HOWEVER! The big plus is a small good quality and inexpensive cafe, and you dont actually need to go into Birdoswald to use! (though you would have to pay for parking). W are beginning to find that English Heritage sites often have very high qaulity and not terribly expensive food, though a cafe is not present everywhere.

Top tip, visit nearby Cawfields for the grand sum of £1 parking fee if you just want to visit a nice stretch of wall and a milecastle in a pleasant setting.

Thank stratoszero

This was really interesting and well laid out, very informative. It was good value for money. It was lovely to see part of Hadrians Wall.

Had a lovely walk along part of Hadrian's wall across the river Irving. The sheer history and remains are a must see.

My daughter and I went to Birdoswald Fort as part of a day out by Hadrian's Wall. There really isn't much to see at the Fort, nor is it particularly well interpreted. We felt that the £8.30 entrance fee each was not good value for money - we would have done better just to pay the car park charge and view the wall from there.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Although it is a ruin so not huge amounts to see, it is interesting and well done. In the visitor center, there are a variety of activities for kids to learn about life at the fort. They have incorporated a game into exploring the grounds that had my kids running and looking at everything. They also liked the sheep that share the grounds with the ruins.
