We were here in June walking. Most of trails were very quiet, which meant we saw Ibex, Chamois and Marmots. There was still a lot of snow on the paths which made the walks more sporting. The wild flowers were amazing!

What a great few days to climb this immense mountain, the highest in Italy at 4,061m. We stayed at a hut overnight before setting out at 6am to get up there. Beautiful day but because we arrived at about 2.30pm, we were the only ones there

We walked the Alta Via 2 through Grand Paradiso National Park in late August and were rewarded with great weather as well as spectacular scenery and not too many walkers.

There are many aspects to the park with much vertical elevation requiring both ascents as well as descents and good fitness helps.

The Refugios in the park are excellent and necessary as many of the routes require two days from one valley hotel to the next. Refugios also include dinner and breakfast.

Well worth walking the through route rather than just day trips.

We summited Gran Paradiso on a lovely clear day. The hike is tough with some technical aspects of roping and effective use of crampons. However if you are working with a food guide you will be safe. Stunning views all round. The last few meters is challenging if you're scared of heights but very worthwhile!

The water seems to be flowing out of every crevice in the mountains of the Gran Paradiso, with more-and-more spectacular water falls at every turn. Plenty of wildlife if you're willing to walk into the back country. Only one hitch - they restrict dogs.
