The Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel is located about a mile from the Mesquite Dunes, one of the most beautiful parts of Death Valley. The dunes are at their most beautiful right after sunrise, and it's a sight you'll never forget. For that reason, this hotel is the perfect base if you want to have that experience.

The rooms themselves are old school 1950s type rooms. They're clean and comfortable, with no frills. They're perfectly in character with the area. The only quibbles I have are the lack of any surface in the bathroom to put your toiletries, the practically non-existent wifi in the rooms, and the excessively loud air conditioning units. That said, there is good hard-wired internet available in the business center and I certainly wouldn't want to do without the air conditioning.

The one problem we had was the cavalier attitude of one front desk clerk about our check-in. Check in time is 4 pm. We got there about 10 minutes early, which is not unreasonable. Our rather surly desk clerk acted like we were committing a serious offense by asking to check in, told us that neither of our rooms were ready. told us to go eat lunch and come back closer to 5 pm. I was a front desk clerk at a very busy hotel near a major amusement park for 4 years, and I can tell you that in this situation any desk clerk who really cares about their guests does one simple thing: pick up the phone, call housekeeping, and see if the rooms are ready but just not entered in the system yet. Our clerk couldn't be bothered. By the way, the check in time at the hotel where I worked was noon, and in my four years I never, ever told a guest to go away and come back an hour after check in time began.

Luckily, instead of going away for an hour, we just went for a short 20 minute drive, came back, and got a different desk clerk who was excellent. He checked us in right away,(our rooms were in fact ready) and very patiently answered all of our questions.

We had dinner and the breakfast buffet at the village restaurant. Both were very good. The service at dinner in particular was excellent. Both the server and the person at the door were cheerful, courteous and genuinely cared about their customers..

I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay in the park. Just don't assume you can check in at check in time.

One final note: the General Store is the best place in Death Valley to gas up. When we were there, gas was $3.91 at Stovepipe Wells, but $5.17 at Furnace Creek. The store also has a very nice selection of drinks, snacks and souvenirs, all reasonably priced.

Thanks for joining us Suzie! First, let me apologize for the inconsistent service you received during your first attempt to check in. Although we do our best to have every guest room ready and waiting when our guests arrive, when situations arise in which they aren’t, at the very least, we expect our staff to provide courteous service and helpful suggestions. In fact, the option that you chose voluntarily should have been what we offered as well. As you noted, we are just a short drive from some of the Park’s most popular destinations and are perfect to visit just before dinner, so that really was a fail on our part. As someone who is familiar with the hospitality industry, you are familiar with how much impact staff can have on a guest’s visit and we recognize that it did in this case as well. On a positive note, we are pleased that the remainder of your interactions with our staff were much better as they more accurately reflect our expectations for guest service. We appreciate your feedback as we are always interested in ways in which we can improve the experience of each guest as well as identify ways in which we can improve our staff’s performance.
We hope that you will visit us again to enjoy more of Death Valley National Park and everything that Stovepipe Wells Village has to make adventures here comfortable and welcoming. Until then, safe travels!

Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel is a nice oasis in the heart of Death Valley National Park. The surroundings are stunning, of course, and the "village" has a nice saloon, a grocery store and a swimming pool. It is a perfect base to explore Death Valley.

We stayed here for one night. Absolutely loved it. The rooms, shop and Saloon are totally in keeping with were you are. A modern style hotel would be completely out of place here. That said, the rooms were very clean and comfortable. Staff were so nice and helpful. It was 120F when we were there, being from Ireland, I'd never felt anything like it lol. Thank the gods for aircon. Would definitely recommend this place and hope to make it back there some day.

Room tip: The closer your room to the main reception and saloon, the better.

First I would like to warn anyone that is going to make reservations for Stovepipe Wells, to do it by phone directly with the hotel. I made the mistake of thinking I was making online reservations with them and it turned out it was with Cancelon, a third party reservations service The room we were first given was totally not up to our expectations, but the manager made it right by upgrading our room which she did not have to do. The bar and restaurant have great hamburgers, and the tap beer is cold, they even have IPS's. The AC worked great, altho the hair dryer did not work at all, but when its 113 outside, does it matter? The housekeeping was somewhat lacking, but we were only there 3 nights, the bed got made, thats about it. .Employees are friendly

Room tip: Reserve with the hotel, the rooms are pricy for what you get, but there are not many choices if you want to stay inside Death Valley.

We stopped here for 1 night and had a really good experience. We took the road through Bad water and saw some amazing sights. They have everything you need in the little village. Saloon where we had lunch and then once our room was ready we had one of the little bungalows near the main building. Lovely comfortable bed, great shower and everything you need for a short stay. They do a buffet breakfast for $13 with a hot a cold choice. Small pool is also available for guest which was lovely with them temperatures being 107 that day we visited. WiFi and phones didn't work very well but they do have computer you can use if needed.

Room tip: All room are the same
