Hard to find, and hard to leave. Kama Sutra was the start and end of many an epic night in Osaka. Richard, Hiromi and the Kama staff are like family and even after years away from Osaka, visiting Kama Sutra is like going home. You never know where the night will take you (singing your heart out in costume, dancing on the bar, and stumbling your way out of the building in the bright morning light are all likely scenarios). It's a place to meet new people and make lifelong friendships. It's definitely the thing I miss most about my crazy years in Osaka. If you have one night in Osaka, make sure not to miss out on a visit to Kama Sutra, where the party never stops!
In 1 of the million bars in Osaka this place will carry on the party as long as it needs to. A mixture of the craziest Japanese people and foreigners this place tend to transform shy singers into karaoke ravers. Its a small underground bar in a dark dingy corner.... and I mean that in the greatest way possible
If you love karaoke and are looking to meet new friends this is a place for you. The owner and staffs are very nice, you wouldn't feel alone here.
I've been to Kama Sutra countless times. Typically I come in around 3:00 AM on a Wednesday or Thursday after I finish work. Around these hours the bar can be a nice, dark retreat. The perfect spot to enjoy a nightcap and good conversation with the staff before heading home. Other times it can be something like a Salvador Dali painting come to life. Seemingly bottomless drinks make time and money lose all practical meaning while tourists, local ex-pats, and a Turkish Freddy Mercury look-a-like try to get through all 7 hours of a 'Queen Karaoke Medley.'
Drinks are reasonably priced and the bar is well stocked with interesting characters. If you have a bad singing voice, ask for the "sexy karaoke" and watch as cute Japanese girls berate you for disappointing them.
I lived in Osaka for many years during what I would like to call "The Golden Era". In those days, pretty much every single person I knew and hung out with was a certifiable alcoholic by any standard and there was not a place in the city that we had not had drinks before.
Kama Sutra was not only one of the places frequented most often, but it is one of Osaka's iconic mainstays - where the tequila flows freely and one not need to be ashamed should he or she have one too many and find themselves sleeping facedown in the hallway because they couldn't find the elevator to get back down to street level (not like that's ever happened to me). Just kidding, that has happened to me a million times there.
This is one of the bars I miss most when I reflect on my crazy years in Osaka. If you haven't been... Go!
I lived in Osaka for a period of 15 months, and of all spots I would visit, Kama was always the most fun. Richard and his staff are not only accommodating and friendly, but they are an absolute riot to hang out with. I highly recommend putting Kama in your Osaka night life lineup, even if you visit only one spot!
