My wife and I just spent a fantastic week at the GPKM and are sad to be heading home ( I am writing this review waiting for our connecting flight at Dubai Airport).

The resort is excellent, but very laid back. No big activities or parties, this is a place to totally mellow out. The food choices are limited but fine. We did the bed and breakfast and were good with that, but many people get the all inclusive. If this resort were in the Caribbean it would be four stars...but it is not, and it's location brings it up to five star level.

The water is amazing, just a color you will not find anywhere else (maybe south pacific atolls). There are a few options for staying; beach, ocean, and reef. Beach is nice if you have kids, but the best is the over water reef bungalow with pool. Your back yard is the coral reef that plunges into the Indian ocean about 20 feet from the stairs that lead to your deck. On a crystal clear day the colors are simply amazing. The fish are there in the thousands, and we also saw octopus and star fish. Every day we saw another fish species we had missed the previous days. They provide snorkeling gear so no need to bring your own. Our villa, 16, was fantastic, just amazing. You can really stay the entire time in it and be very happy. I loved the daily snorkel right down our steps.

There is a buffet breakfast which we ate at about 10am each day. That filled us without the need for lunch. We then chose different places (ok, there are only three in all) to have dinner. We had one bottle of wine per night so our costs were not that bad. The manager of the buffet, Rekha was really wonderful and gave us great advice (like to sign up for the weekly fish BBQ on the beach; it is a wonderful and much cheaper alternative to the 'dinner on the beach' that is offered as a special. We usually had the same waiter at the buffet, Adam, and he was really great. On our last day we asked him about dolphins and he said they would show up soon...and they did! About 30 went by as we sat having breakfast.

Some tips: Bring water shoes! There is a lot of dead coral and it can be difficult on your feet. Buy some snacks and put in your luggage to have through your stay. We wanted to go to Male for 1/2 day but due to COVID they will not allow it, so no way to get supplies. Ask for extra water in your room (ask the person who cleans your room; ours was Haleem and he was terrific, always making sure we had enough), you will be amazed how fast you go through it. The resort is only 200 miles from the equator and on a clear day the sun is incredibly hot. Use a sunscreen of at least 50 and reapply it. Bring more than you think you will need!

Negatives? Not really anything major. The dive shop could have better communication about what is available and when. We did a fishing trip for 2 hours that was a lot of fun (we ate the two fish we caught the next day for lunch; for $10 they clean, cut and provide side dishes). We wanted to go snorkeling at some of the other atolls but got mixed messages if / when we would go.

The main negative is (at least for us North Americans) is the distance. It is a long way to go ( about 24 hours to get there and longer to get home). It took my wife and I three days to simply adjust to the time difference and the jet lag. By the time we really recovered the trip was half over! The 2nd half of our trip was so much better! This negative is not the fault of the resort, but people coming from USA and Canada need to keep this in mind. The fact that after you land you just take a 20 minute speedboat ride instead of another flight was very important to us (though you can see Male from the resort, so some people feel the resort is not "remote" enough)

Also, weather is an issue. It is not a very stable area, so we often had rain in the afternoon. We only had two days that were 100% sunny, while we had one day that was so rainy that we literally could go nowhere. The resort is of course not at fault for this but it is something to consider. I would fault the resort for having a very limited TV selection (add Netflix, would be very easy to do!). We did not want to watch TV but the day we were trapped inside our room there was not much to see.

It really was a wonderful once in a lifetime experience!

Room tip: Get the reef villas with pool, it is worth it (unless you are brining kids, then the beachfront villas are best)

The hotel has a wonderful yoga instructor special thanks for the warmth and wonderful yoga classes at sunrise. There was a little noise from the technical area, but otherwise everything was fine. The island has a fantastic reef. I didn't want to leave this heavenly place.

Employees here were polite and honest which made the trip amazing. The food was good at the edge and the drinks were tasty at the breeze. Room service was clean and quick. Only disappointment was FireDOOR because the food was not delicious like I hoped. However, my overall experience was top quality!

The hotel location is great, only 20 min by speed boat. The island is super well located; amazing reef side for unbelievable snorkeling and shallow water white beach side for quiet, peaceful and restful time. The staff is kind, helpful and above all excellent in servicing any guests' needs. The hotel is only 2 years old; the bedrooms are well designed, with good taste, nice decoration and anything you need. The bed is super comfortable. The food is great; wide selection of local and international delicacies and of very good quality. Last but not least, there are many activities offered; outdoor cinema, boat tour, jetski, snorkeling, game room with Playstation, billiard, ping pong table etc. We strongly recommend this amazing place for any type of vacation you are looking for.

That would be the perfect example of a 3 stars hotel getting a 5* reward because of their amazing location. Just a short boat trip away but you are constantly disappointed by: Poor maintenance of equipment, under trained staff, cleanliness, bad A/C, a very redundant buffer offering.
With all those points, it is still the best possible holiday spot thanks to the location.
