Domaine St. George is an unusually fine destination in France

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Oct 2019
The Domaine St George has many outstanding features. Hosts John and Maureen’s lively and generous warmth. Lovely old country chateau, completely upgraded and charming. Location in Southern France. Food. Wine. Events. Activities. Each of these makes the Domaine St. George an unusually fine destination.

Maureen and John are warm, fun and helpful hosts. They welcomed us, strangers from the US, like we were family. Originally from England, they are “foodies” attracted to Limoux for its obvious charm. They suggested and arranged appointments for us for many delightful activities and dinners.

Charming French country chateau with beautiful decor. Refreshing new swimming pool and outdoor sitting areas. You can dine in front under lovely shade tree with views of surrounding vineyards and hills — or inside in the lovely formal dining room.

The cycling portion of our customized trip was organized by Mike Khaw, owner of Agile Compass. He organized everything – booking Domaine St. George, excellent road bikes from and managing everything for a great cycling trip.

The Limoux-area is like the California Napa Valley wine growing areas. But the towns, cathedrals, and sites are centuries old here — not decades old like in the California Wine Region. The cafes and restaurants are French — that says a lot. And, there is very little traffic. The lush Limoux greenery was a stark contrast to in golden California. Like Napa, the rolling terrain can include challenging climbs.

Domaine St. George is nestled in vineyards. From our bedroom window we saw rippling fields of vines with lush purple grapes and rolling green hills in the background. Fields of sunflowers, their heavy heads drooping, were ready for harvest. In September, people and tractors the harvest was in full tilt.

Sparkling wine was first made by monks in nearby Saint Hilaire Abbey. In 1938, Languedoc AOC was awarded for the Blanquette of Limous and the Blanquette ancestral method. Maureen and John recommended 3 wineries for the one afternoon we had free to taste wines. The first, Gayda was a modern, friendly winery, reminiscent of a California winery. The second, Domaine de Fourn reflected four generations of Blanquette. Sieur d’Arques was a modern tasting room — a consortium of many wineries.

The food! Maureen’s fine breakfasts and dinners delighted us. A Week of Gluttony but we just skimmed the choices of restaurants. Maureen is an excellent chef and we enjoyed our private dinners here. We loved dinners at Bacchus and D’Odestan as well.

John and Maureen took us to a fabulous winery party with generous wine and folks from the local community. Our hosts knew of many local festivals and markets in the area. Immense Carcassonne and quaint Bugarach are also worth visiting. The Domaine St. George is a marvelous vacation destination for many reasons.

John and Maureen have created a very welcoming, comfortable home away from home. They were not only most helpful with our many requests for help with reservations at nearby restaurants, but they also told us about an unadvertised free event at a local winery to celebrate the harvest with free hors d'oeuvres and wine tasting. Maureen is an excellent chef, who prepared not only delicious and generous breakfasts with a breadth of choices, but also at our request did 2 amazing dinners for us.

Each of the rooms had its own character, was kept immaculate daily and was very comfortable, with a full complement of toiletries included (and plush washcloths, something that doesn't otherwise seem to exist in France!)

A group of us stayed at Domaine St George for a week in September and it was just perfect. The rooms were interesting, clean and comfortable. The hosts were fantastic. They were never intrusive and yet they were always there when we wanted to talk and we enjoyed talking to them. Meals were optional and we decided to have breakfasts every day and 2 dinners. Maureen was an excellent chef and all meals were beyond expectations.

Stayed at this lovely Gite after buying my house. I didn’t have any furniture so decided to stay the night here before heading back to Paris. Looking at the reviews, the property had fantastic feedback from many a customer. I have to say, this is thoroughly well deserved. I arrived and was greeted by Maureen, instantly warmed to her. I was shown to my room and offered to go downstairs and have a chat over a glass of wine. Had a lovely chat for the best part of an hour with both Maureen and John. They know the area well and are in a fantastic position to answer any questions I had on the area. Recommended restaurants and let us use the phone to seek a reservation. As we were the only guests, I was asked what time I would like breakfast. The next morning, we had breakfast, the ambiance and the warmth of character in the house was evident. The food was well prepared and thoroughly enjoyable with plenty of flavour, washed down with a perfectly strong coffee. We had t finished out croissants so were asked if we would like them wrapped to take with us. John had kindly written down numerous web address of local groups and points of contact in the area, along with numbers for local Artisans that he knew. My other half who is Brazilian was really taken aback by the hospitality. The house is surrounded by vineyards and is situated at a vantage point to be able to look into the beautiful french countryside, such a beautiful area. When we left, both owners saw us off with a smile and a wave. Would I stay here again? Definitely would I recommend the property? Thoroughly. Thank you for making our stay so special.
