Description: The Derby Arms joined the Ainscoughs Pub team in December 2008 after extensive restoration. Serving good food, beer and wine in a traditional environment with log fires and period furniture just like the rest of the pubs in the group. We have now been recommended in the Michelin Pub Guide for 2014 and have won the 'Pub of the Season' award, CAMRA. We have a games room with a pool table and dart board which is intended to form the focus of the village. The Derby Arms was purchased from Punch Taverns by the Witherslack Community Land Trust and the Ainscough Family took over the lease to preserve it as part of Witherslack life. Part of the pub was converted into the village shop, run by the community with community shareholders.

Ate here 2 years ago but when we returned we were refused a table at 7.40pm.

The waitress initially offered us a table and a 25-30 mins wait for food.

As we were about to sit down when the gentleman behind the bar took issue with this and said they couldn’t do food because the chef goes home at 9. He said food wouldn’t be coming out until 10pm.
There were 3 empty tables. He wasn’t very polite.

Very disappointingly we left to find alternative pub/restaurant in Cartmel.

Fab food and excellent value rooms. The area is great for walking and cycling, easy to get to, avoiding the mad rush of Windermere et al.

Ordered a cheese and pickle sandwich. It was disgusting. Cheese was hard and dry, with a thick crust, smelt awful. Bread was worse. Much worse with mould all around the sides. No idea how the kitchen could have missed it. Bar staff refunded the cost of that sandwich (we had paid for another one...which we didn’t now want to eat) no apology and infact didn’t seem surprised. Won’t visit again and would not recommend.

We went here for our tea as we were staying down the road in beech hill house. The food they served was absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t fault it. They also allow dogs inside which made the pub even better.

We visited the Derby Arms on Easter Monday, I was glad we had booked as it was busy. Menu choice was good and suited all of our family (12yrs - 92yrs old). Food was excellent and plenty of it. Starters we enjoyed were; garlic mushrooms, ham hock terrine. Mains; steak & ale pie was fantastic, sea bass and gammon went down a treat. Desserts; toffee apple crumble, creme brûlée and the selection of ice creams were great.

On arrival at the pub, I did actually wonder what I had booked as it isn’t the most swish place, it was more homely but the food and the service were fantastic (very friendly staff) and it goes to prove you shouldn’t rely on 1st impressions. We only live 15 mins away and drive past this little gem all the time, I certainly will be visiting it again and again.

Thank Sarah S
