We just returned from a fantastic week-long family retreat at Chateau de Rhodes. We were 18 adults and 10 children staying in their 14-bedroom Villa/Chateau/Castle. We have spent many vacations in villas around the world, but we have never so much enjoyed the facilities, hospitality and delights of the region as we did last week.
First, the facilities were phenomenal. All the bedrooms and bathrooms were comfortable, spacious, clean and well maintained. For an ancient chateau, the facilities were in remarkable shape. The addition of endless public rooms, each with its own specific purpose, is hard to imagine. The grounds, the swimming pool, the tennis court, the on-property stream and river, the beautiful hike right out the back gate provided an endless stream of delights for our whole family from the 2-year-old to the 72-year-old.
The descriptions said that the hosts could provide meals, yoga classes, massages, wine-tasting and bicycles. We bought them all and were thrilled by the activities and by the quality and the variety of the dinners and breakfasts that Elie and his wife provided. Most evenings, we cooked for the 10 children ourselves and allowed the adults to enjoy a gourmet meal provided by our hosts after the children were in bed. They gave us our space to enjoy everything the Chateau had to offer, but were also always available to solve any possible problem or request.
One of the reasons we chose to come to Chateau de Rhodes was that none of our family had been in this area of France next to the Pyrenees. We were continually in wonder at the beauty and lushness of the scenery. We did our research well and planned an itinerary that included great short hikes, bike rides, a phenomenal boat ride in a cave, two castle visits in Foix and Carcassonne, several outdoor markets, and a prehistoric theme park. The Chateau is located in the middle of a 45 km bike path that cyclists come from all over to do. We arranged for another 10 electric bikes to be with us for the week, along with baby seats, baby wagons, children’s bikes and tag along bikes. Adding on the bikes that the Chateau provided, we were able to go out for 2 beautiful tours, one in each direction. To all of this add a series of great lunches in restaurants in the area. Most of these included our 10 children (28 people) and some of them were truly gourmet affairs just for adults. We flew on a direct flight to Barcelona and drove from there through the Pyrenees (also for the first time) and on to the Chateau. It was a beautiful drive, broken up with a great hike and a fantastic lunch.
Altogether we had a truly great week. The only downside is that it is hard to imagine being able to plan another vacation anywhere that could come close to our experience at Chateau de Rhodes.
