We were staying in nearby Manciano and the owner of our B&B recommended Ultima Spaggia as a beach and place to eat. It's on a long stretch of volcanic sand. It's a typical beachside restaurant with whitewashed wooden floor boards and lots of sea-related memorabilia on the walls. We paid a modest sum for a huge seafood buffet (pick four different seafood types for €16) and had a lovely time getting tucked in with cold beer. We rented loungers on the beach for the day at €10 each. Nice down-to-earth spot.

I've been visiting beaches in Italy for some 25 years (my wife is Italian) and l'Ultima Spiaggia has a mythical reputation as the hideaway of politicians, actors, and the simply wealthy.
After spending a day there with my family and that of my sister-in-law we all came to the same conclusion that it is a little over-rated.
The daily-rate for an umbrella, 2 sun beds and a chair was about €50, a lot more expensive than the neighbouring beach (known locally as the 'Penultima Soiaggia'!) and more than our usual beach further north in Tuscany. Perhaps the longer-term rates are better.
So what do you get for the money?
Well, the beach is clean, toilets are acceptable but you have to pay for both cold and warm showers. The staff are pleasant and seem to speak a number of languages. There is a good (pay) car park with shelter for the cars and unusually a paved path to the beach.
There is a coffee and snack bar, a very good self-service restaurant (try the misto grande enough for 2 people and good value at €20) and naturally a separate full-service restaurant.
The waves were high on the day we were there and despite the red flag flying we did go into the sea to play. This is when we discovered that there seems to be a hole in front of the Ultima Spiaggia beach created by some very strong swells and currents. The lifeguards reacted very quickly to the situation and came in to grab the boys, for which I was grateful. If you do go there watch out for the marker buoys, which aren't that obvious if there are lots of waves.
So would I go again? Probably not. I would though consider going to a neighbouring beach and eating at the Ultima Spiaggia.

Just a very, very expansive beach filled with ladies with filippino nannies, rich men reading l'Unità and all sort of radical chic. Nice to look around at the local "fauna" but 50 euro for an ombrella and two beds in July seems a bit high.
