“Smooth sailing”
Review of South African Airways

Reviewed 18 September 2018 via mobile

I discovered this flight by accident and it turned out to be a gem of a find. Usually, traveling from Accra Ghana to Washington on DC involves a lengthy and cumbersome trip through Europe that risks baggage loss or delays since one must change flights in Europe. The direct flight on South African Airways from Accra to Washington’s Dulles International Airport cut down the travel time and eliminated the need to change flights on the way. Because the flight departs Accra late at night (11.35pm), I slept soundly for most of the trip, especially as there was very little turbulence. The plane was sparkling clean and big and the seats were comfortable . Inflight Service was excellent and food and drinks were plentiful and of high quality. My biggest complaint is the price. The one-Way economy class ticket cost even more than a rountrip ticket on many other airlines that fly the same route.

The flight was delayed at OR Tambo for close to two hours because of the weather conditions but SAA kept us informed via email as to the reasons of the delay but it did so after we had been waiting already for an hour. I felt they could have done it sooner. Other than that the staff members from check-in and in the flight were friendly and helpful. They made you feel at ease and came promptly when called for assistance.

It is not a pleasure to travel SA airways econamy class. When U do your booking and ask for a seat with a little extra leg space, U always get the same answer, nothing available. But when U board the aircraft and be seated, their is always some of these seats available. When U ask the flight attendent can I occupy one of these seats, I am told it is only available for certain passengers.

Older plane with few amenities and glitches in the ones they have. There was no charging port for electronics. The seats are in as tight as they could be, aisles are narrow (I know this is economy...but really) and no foot rests. They have an interactive movie system but it glitched its way across the Atlantic stopping, starting and re-playing every 30 seconds or so. I finally had to give up watching anything as it was too frustrating. The flight crew was not very attentive and not particularly friendly. Food was typical. Our flight was 14 hours. We have flown on both Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Etihad for long flights. This was the worst of the three (although Etihad is a close second to worst).

Long flight, 15 hours, but made more comfortable by the extra leg room in coach. Service was good on the flight, they came around with water about every 2-3 hours. Checking was easy. All around a decent experience.
