Day Trip

Hi, we are coming to the cape for the day with three teens. I would like to be near/ on the ocean and explore Wellfleet area. Kids don't want to sit on beach too long but do an activity. Would renting bikes from Orleans be a good idea. This way we could bike(the activity) to Wellfleet, it would help with finding parking issue and then explore when we got there or would it be better just to drive there and then explore once we got there? I've been looking on websites and exploring the area but thought you all might have answers to some questions. Do beaches sell day passes? How far is the beach from town? We want to go to Mac O's on the pier. Would this be near a beach? Trying to figure out if we can park in one spot for the day and do it all. Also, what beach is recommended. Last question, does the rail trail ride along the ocean in Wellfleet?

Since you will want to get to your destination quickly how about visiting the Upper Cape for this trip and save the Outer Cape for a visit when you have more time.

Instead you could go to Falmouth. There you can park the car and go to Corner Cycle. Get your bikes and ride the Shining Sea Bikeway into Woods Hole where you can explore this tiny scientific community on foot after you lock your bikes.

Back in Falmouth you can walk the Village Green and stop in at the Historical Society.

Along Main St. are one of a kind shops interspersed with tee shirt etc stores. Note: clean restrooms just off Main St. on Academy.

For lunch (pre-Labor Day) go to the mouth of Falmouth Harbor to The Clam Shack and 'dine' on the rooftop to enjoy water views. If you want to get out on the water then a terrific thing to do (also pre-Labor Day) is a cruise on the schooner Liberte which departs from the dock at The Clam Shack.

Spend the end of your day in North Falmouth at Old Silver Beach. If you can stay for sunset you won't regret it. The public side will be charging a parking fee pre-Labor Day until 4 or 5:00. Also the public is welcome to buy food/drink at adjacent resort beach or pool side. Sea Crest Resort.

Then you go north up and over the bridge.

P.S. Falmouth has more shoreline than any other Cape town. Suggest that you look at a map and ride the narrow beach roads and tiny bridges along the south shore and stop at Nobska Lighthouse for some pix.

Okay, then since you are going before Labor Day everything that has been will still be open. I posted about Falmouth before I saw your reply btw.

Note that some businesses all summer have been closed more days than normal due to lack of help. So try to go, Fri, Sat, Sun, this week.

For a Wellfleet visit, I would drive there. Plenty of free parking on the harbor at the pier where Mac's on the Pier is located. There is a small calm beach next door, Mayo Beach, but if you want a larger ocean beach, you can go Marconi. It is not easy to bike from the end of the bike trail into Wellfleet since you either have to be on Rt. 6 for awhile or bike up some hilly terrain to get to the overpass bridge over Rt. 6. Also I am unsure if the end of the bike trail is open since they were working on it this summer.

Alternately, you could drive out to the scenic Great Island (free), from the pier area and walk about 15 minutes to the Bay beach where you can walk along the shore or inland for miles. There are portatoilets in the parking area but no facilities on the beach. Bring hats, water, etc. It's never crowded.

Renting bikes in Orleans near the bike path is a good idea if you decide on that activity.

You can walk to the center of Wellfleet from the harbor area but there are two parking lots on Main St. as well. I've always found spaces there.

We have never found that a day trip to Wellfleet is daunting. It's a long day but the rewards make up for it.

ds L. If you decide to drive up to Wellfleet then do go to the Atlantic ocean beach at Cahoon Hollow where there is a gorgeous beach just below the tall dune.

Check out the former lifesaving station there which is now www.thebeachcomber.com and they have a live beach cam operating year round if you want to take a peek. Parking is free if you have something to eat at the restaurant while you are there.

I now see that something is out of alignment for their live beach cam but some of their website photos will give you an understanding of the area until they readjust their webcam.

Mayo Beach was included because the OP asked if Mac's on the Pier was near a beach. It is next door to Mac's. For people who don't want to spend much time at a beach, maybe take a quick swim, it is an option along with the Great Island walk--which combines beach and activity, or Marconi Beach.

They will be eating at tables that look out at Mayo. If they want a better beach, they have other options. It's easy.
