Dress Code (male)

Is it appropriate for men to wear shorts when walking around Petra? If not, are jeans ok?

Hi Luke,

Absolutely! It's perfectly fine for men to wear shorts when exploring Petra. The site is accustomed to receiving tourists from all over the world, and you'll find that many visitors opt for casual and comfortable attire, including shorts.

In fact, you'll likely observe locals wearing shorts as well, especially during warmer weather. So, whether you choose to wear shorts or jeans, both options are acceptable for walking around Petra.

The most important thing is to dress comfortably for your visit, ensuring that you can explore the ancient city and its magnificent sights with ease.

Enjoy your time in Petra!

Warm regards,

Khaled Masadeh

LukeJ123, men can pretty much walk around in anything in Jordan. There are no cultural restrictions other than in mosques and some government institutions. You will be fine wearing shorts in Petra. Be sure to take lots of sunscreen as there is little to no shade in Petra other than when you are walking through the Siq during some parts of the day.

Hi, we were a group of about 15 people on our trip (in 2022) and in Petra not only the men, but also the women, wore shorts.

Petra is not a mosque so shorts are fine.

That said, you might want to wear lightweight hiking pants or cotton/linen summer pants because you will be out in the sun for hours.
