Limited walking ability Robberg

Hi

My husband and I love the sound of Robberg Nature Reserve, however he has limited walking ability. Is it still worth a visit even though walking the long and medium routes would be out of the question? We are keen bird watchers and love wildlife watching and we’re wondering if we would be able to get some good views etc from the short circular walk.

Also, would we have to there early to get a parking place? We will be there in September 2023

Thank you

The views at Robberg are incredible, even from the parking area. I remember that there is a paved area near the parking bays and some benches where you could have a cold drink or a picnic from home, if you don’t mind paying the entrance fee just for a picnic and some photo’s ; )

Some reviews mention the steep up and downs on the first part of the trail, so maybe message one of them direct to ask? See https://www.tripadvisor.co.za/ShowUserReviews-g312558-d1492184-r854818767-Robberg_Nature_Reserve-Plettenberg_Bay_Western_Cape.html

We did the 5km hike which I found quite strenous, but I cannot remember if it was all dirt track right from the start.

On https://thescribsandnibs.com/africa/south-africa/garden-route/robberg-nature-reserve-hikes/ there are some photos of the walkway on Trail no.1 - note there is no guardrail plus uneven surfaces. Sticking to paved areas might be safer in your case.

Definitely still worth a visit.

Just walk as far as you can then turn around.

Amazing views along the coast line. Lots of seating by the car parking area and also some seats along the pathways especially near the start.

From what I remember it can get busy with locals early morning as they walk that area regularly, but we stayed during the Christmas period.

It’s a beautiful area.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and the links. We are driving from Cape Town to Port Alfred with many stops in between, but have three nights in the Knysna/Plettenberg area, so wanted to be able to find places to visit in that area.

Thank you all again!

Before reaching Knysna proper, you could take the turnoff to Belvedere and visit the tiny stone church at Belvedere, it is quite historic and has a Stations of the Cross meditation garden laid out around the property, if that would interest you. Travelling further up the hill is a great viewpoint over the greater Knysna area. Up and over the top of the ridge, the road will bring you to Brenton on Sea, that has 2 restaurants and unobstructed views over the ocean and a beautiful beach that stretches 6 km all the way to Buffalo Bay. Brenton Blu restaurant is truly memorable.

Having just walked the short and the medium route yesterday I would suggest that even the short route will be challenging unless you have full mobility. There is a great view point from the car park and picnic benches behind the drinks stall and a relatively easy walk up from the drinks stall to the top of the cliff, but beyond that it would be challenging! It is an amazing place though, with awesome views, one of the best we’ve ever done!
