We love bali so will we love pai?

Hey all,

I’m trying to get a sense of what pai is like?

With entire TA threads dedicated to both loving and hating pai it’s proving difficult to know whether to add this location to my itinerary after chiang Mai.

For reference we are a young family of 4 kids 1,8.

I get there will be a lot of backpackers and we aren’t into the party scene but we do like a lively vibe and nature is our thing, so defiantly keen to get out and about and explore the countryside.

We love bali and it’s super touristy, so will we love pai?

Skip Pai, it is a backpacker tourist trap these days. Scooters whizzing everywhere, over priced food, more marijuana shops than 7-11s.

I would consider going a bit further to Soppong / Pang Mapha. Lots of nature, caves, rivers, not too many tourists. Tuesday morning local market visited by plenty of locals in traditional clothes.

Nothing in Pai. Best thing to do is hire a car in Chiang Mai and work out your own trip.

Pai is full of tourists. Id suggest driving the Mae Hong Son loop. Rent a car for a week.

We’re in Pai now, sort of. The Pai Viengfah is just outside of Pai and has a shuttle on demand into town. We use it as an overnight stop on the drive to Mae Hong Son. Will go into Pai itself for dinner but that’s it. Dusty, a bit grimy, throwback to hippie days! Perhaps we’re too old to appreciate it.

This place, though, has great views- rice paddy and water buffalo from the back balcony, mountain side with white Buddha from front balcony. Breakfast here is awful- we’ve learned to eat elsewhere.

A mini Ubud in the funkier areas…I stay in Ubud and I love Pai. Was just there in December. You can seek live music and tea houses.

Nature up there is gorgeous! Not sure how adventurous your family is but check out some of huts or farms if the kids like that.

Some are a quick walk into town. Good luck with your decision :)

You might like the Nan-Phrae-Phayao area if you like the nature aspects of Bali: lakes, mountains, beautiful vistas. I haven't been to Pai as all of my Thai friends recommended Nan instead when I lived in BKK and I was not disappointed.
