Self drive visit to Oman.

Okay guys and girls (strictly non PC) really do need your help with this one.

Visiting DXB in August and woudl like to drive over to the east coast through Hatta and into Oman. My problem is I do not know what the visa regulations are. The car can be driven into Oman bit need to know what happens to passengers (all UK passports) when we get to the border. Are there any charges, fees to pay?

Asked this question of another forum and no response whatsoever.

Thanks in advance.

It's easy, nothing to worry about.

If you have full UK passports then you get a visit visa at the Hatta border post stamped in your passport.

Cost RO6 per person.

The procedure at the border can be a little confusing as they are few signs to tell you what to do.

Here's the procedure:

Border procedure.

Dubai -> Muscat

Just after Hatta is the UAE Border Post.

IMPORTANT - Get a UAE exit stamp in your passport. Drive on.

Go through security checkpoint (Omani) and get form, keep it.

Drive to Oman Border Post (big building) and park the car.

Get visa form and and fill it in.

Fill in the Visa form and queue up again to get Omani entry stamp in your passport. Pay OMR6.

GCC residents only pay OMR3 per passport.

Back to the car and drive through passport control on the side of the building.

Drive on ~2kms and hand in your security pass that you got above.

Muscat -> Dubai

Arrive at Omani Border Post where you got the entry visa.

Just before you get there stop at small hut and get an exit pass for OMR2.

Drive up to where you get exit stamp in your passport, it’s on the side of the building.

They will stamp your passport and stamp your exit pass, keep it.

Drive on & you will eventually get another small hut where you hand in the exit pass.

Next stop is UAE Border Post. Get Entry stamp in your passport.

At the same window they will give you entry pass.

Drive to entry gate and hand in your entry pass and you’re done.

You must have car insurance that covers you in Oman, not all Dubai rental companies do this, but we know that Budget (amongst others) do it as a couple from Australia did this trip about 6 months ago. They sometimes check that you have insurance at the border and if you don't then you will be refused entry.

Are you driving to Muscat?

Matter of interest which forum did you get zero response on?

We have done this trip several times, it's very easy and driving in Oman is straight forward, relative to Dubai, which can be a bit of a nightmare.

Forgot to mention - if you can avoid driving to Oman via Hatta on a Friday then please do. Oman is a popular weekend getaway destination and the queues at the Omani Border point can be dreadful. Made this mistake the first time we went and it took us nearly 90 mins to get our passport stamped.

Returning from Oman to Dubai on a Friday hasn't been a problem - yet lol

Just got back from another 3 night stay in Muscat on Wednesday and the info we got was that although temps are still high in August, the humidity has dropped off quite a bit and outdoor life is picking up again - that's in Muscat anyway.

Spatan, I am really sorry to hijack your post, but I went onto the other forum that you posted the info on here, Oh my god what a load of dribble, and of the limited few posts I read, slighly political controversial, I don't think I will be asking them for advice on where to eat, if you know what I mean, me thinks I will stick to this site.

About 4 1/2 hours to As Seeb (Muscat) Airport then maybe another 20 -> 40 mins depending on where you are staying in the City.

It's an easy drive. Through the border post at Hatta, then about 15kms or so and then take the 1st exit at the 1st r/a you come to after the border onto R1 (R = Route 1) and stay on that road until you get to Muscat. Decent quality dual-carriageway all the way.

Scenery around Hatta is stunning.

Guessing that you've already got some kind of agenda worked out for your Oman trip. Just thought you might find this interesting:

Have a great time - Oman's a brilliant place to visit.
