Road trip itinerary advice please - is this too much?

Hi all, we are planning a 11-day road trip for September. It's our first time to Romania, we're not that big on cities but are keen to explore the countryside and traditional villages. We have done road trips before so used to driving. Would be very grateful to hear your thoughts on our itinerary please:

Day 1 - Arrive into Cluj Napoca. See Cluj.

Day 2: Drive north to Maramures county. Lacul Albustru, wooden churches.

Day 3: Explore more Maramures, Merry Cemetery. Begin driving back south.

Day 4: Sighisoara, then onto Viscri and other little Saxon villages.

Day 5: See Sibiu and surrounding area (maybe Bran or Peles castle)

Day 6: Drive the Transfagarasan road north to south, stopping off for hikes eg Balea and Capra lakes

Day 7: Begin heading south. Drive to Tulcea in one day (~5hrs) - need to research to find some nice stop offs along way

Day 8: Catch ferry from Tulcea (or hire private boat from Mahmudia) to either Sulina or Sfantu Gheorghe

Day 9: Sulina or Sfantu Gheorghe

Day 10: Get boat back to car, drive back to Bucharest

Day 11: Fly home

My main questions please are:

-is this too much do you think?

-any recommendations of other nice places to see along the route?

-Should we be doing the route in reverse, ie fly into Bucharest and drive to the Danube Delta first? We don't mind either way.

Thanks so much in advance! We're so excited for our trip.

Hello

an honest answer: it is very dense what you are proposing.

now it also depends - it you want to have a flavor of Romania ... than is doable but, briefly:

day 2-3 : Maramures county - wooden churches - there are 8 wooden churches on the UNESCO list - if you aim for those it is doable in 1 day but you need to plan in detail your trip to catch those open - when I say open - not at all of those the custodian is on site- there are some - like the 1 Ieud or the 1 in Poineile Izei where you have a phone number that you call and they arrive in like 15-30 minutes to open the church... so it takes a bit of time.

The Merry cemetery in 1 day - is overkill - you'll spend like maximum 3 hours .. so I recommend you reorganize day's 2 and 3 to include as much as possible evenly split.

day 5 - Sibiu - in 1 day its a rush through the city but can be done ... but to include Bran and Peles castle in the same day I would say it's not possible...

5 hours drive to Tulcea from where? From the Transfagarasan ? ... technically possible, it is tight ad much dependent if you go in the highway how much time you spend getting through or around Bucharest. Typically from Curtea de Arges - to southern end of Transfagarasan (at least 1 option) till Tulcea its 6 hrs driving - done the trip 3-4 times in the past 3 years , never got there in 5 hours.

to sum it all up ... it is dense , but with some planning adjustments doable with some exceptions (you need to trim here and there to fit as much as possible into your trip).

should you have any questions please feel free to ask specifics

Safe travel.

Hi,

1) It's not too much, although on some days you'll have to do a lot of driving.

Something that's not clear is where do you plan to go on day 5: Bran and Peles are around Brasov, not Sibiu.

On day 7 (Pitesti - Tulcea, I guess) there really aren't any major stops unless you want to make detours or lose time in traffic by entering Bucharest.

2) Try to do either Salina Turda from Cluj or the the salt mines at Praid with a slight detour between Maramures and Sighisoara.

Along the Transfagarasan also make stops at Vidraru dam and at the Poienari fortress ruins; south of it don't miss Curtea de Arges cathedral.

3) It doesn't really matter in which direction you do it but I think it would be best to go to Tulcea by public transport, you won't need the car there anyway. You could drop off the car after day 6 (possibly in Bucharest) and take a bus to Tulcea.

Thanks to you both for this - all really helpful.

Tiberiu_Baranyi - we will have another look at our plans for day 2 and 3 in Maramures. Day 5 is flexible for us atm, ie we have the option to stay in Sibiu and see the city, or stay nearer Brasov and do the castles - we just need to decide what we would prefer and book accommodation in the right place. We're not really big fans of castles usually. Agree that castles and Sibiu aren't doable in one day. And good to know about the drive to Tulcea

alterme - will look into public transport to Tulcea, especially as you mention there are no stop-offs. And thanks for those stop off suggestions on Transfagarasan and the Praid salt mine.

We now have to decide whether to keep it as it is, and accept there will be days with a lot of driving which are dense - or cut either Maramures or Danube Delta. If you had to cut either of them, which would you recommend please?

If necessary, you can leave the Danube Delta for another trip (it's likely still going to be the same in a few years, while traditional rural life Maramures is largely ending).

Totally agree - if you would cut , than cut the Delta ( it's a hard to recommend that - since I love the Delta) and come back for another trip , when you could do Bucovina region connected with the Delta

...Maramures is changing much faster than the Delta.

safe travel .
