Flying is a better option. Unless its a public holiday etc, it is usually safe to buy a ticket a day or 2 in advance
Hotels will usually book one for you. The trains run north fairly frequently.

Thank you. I rather enjoy the overnight train trips though. Will probably fly on the return leg.
