July DC Trip with kids

My husband and I are planning to bring our family ( ages 17, 15, and 8) to DC in July for the Nationals - Dodgers games. We want to fit in some touristy stuff during the days. Any suggestions on hotel and daytime activities would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi-we are planning a summer trip as well. I've found it very helpful to read through past posts- trip report posts are especially helpful (do a search for' trips with kids' or 'trips with teens''). Also, check out the 'top questions' section on the right of this page for good information.

Hello,

You will find so many great activities in DC in the summertime. For a start I would check out these sites:

1. National Zoo http://www.nationalzoo.si.edu/ It is free to visit and you will see more than 400 different animal species on 163 acres. If you need to park at the zoo it will cost you, but there is the option of public transportation. Make sure to see the giant pandas.

2. Smithsonian Institution http://www.si.edu/ Includes a total of 19 museums and also the National Zoo mentioned above. Most museums are free to visit. The complete list of museums and information on hours and locations can be found at their website. Some of the more popular ones are the Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Natural History.

3. Bureau of Engraving and Printing http://www.bep.treas.gov/home.html The summer is peak season so you will need tickets that are free. It is a lot of fun to get to see money being printed.

4. Arlington National Cemetery http://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/ is located right across the Potomac River in VA. You can do your own walking tour or take the interpretative tour bus service. Either way, make sure you see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Arlington House.

5. Sightseeing tours on a trolley http://www.trolleytours.com/washington-dc/ These narrated tours will take you throughout the city. You can get on and off all day long wherever you like for the day. They also offer a nighttime tour to see the city all lit-up.

Happy Travels,

You Friend,
