We will be traveling in October from the Lebanon NH area with a final destination of Albany, NY.

We plan to take route 100 from Bridgewater to Wilmington. We assume that would be the most scenic route. The main objective is to observe the fall colors and soak in the rural New England vibe. Agree? Disagree? Suggestions? Any suggestions for a nice route between Wilmington and Albany? Any places "not to miss" along the way? Thanks in advance for your help!

I would take rte 9 west from Wilmington through Bennington to Troy NY -- a very pretty drive the whole way. You might stop at the art museum in Bennington to see the Grandma Moses paintings. Somewhere around Troy I'm sure you pick up local routes to Albany but I don't know which ones.

Not difficult to get from Troy to Albany. Just across the Hudson.

Thanks swedishivy2013 and Howland Owl. I appreciate the suggestions. So that part of route 100 isn't all that great? We will be on the northern part of route 100 earlier in our trip.

I wasn't commenting on rte 100. Yes, I would stay on rte 100 down to Wilmington. Yes, it will be beautiful.

Oops! I need to get my atlas (AKA Google Maps) back out and take a look again.

On Route 100 the Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth is worth a visit:

In Ludlow get a maple creemee (soft ice cream) and some other maple products to take home at the Green Mountain Sugar House:

And the Vermont Country Store in Weston:

When you get to Wilmington, the Hogback Mountain Country Store in Marlboro is in the oppositive direction from Albany but has a "100-mile view" that is worthwhile if you have the extra time. Plus an extensive selection of Vermont and New England goods. Watch the video at the bottom of their home page:

If the timing is right on your way from Bennington to Troy on rte. 7, make a stop at the Man.of Kent pub. It is a local favorite!
