Queenstown and Christchurch: April or September?

I am interested in hiking and walking. I am not interested in skiing. I know the best time is January - March, but If I had to choose between April and September, which one is better?

April is “usually“ drier than September. However day length is marginally longer in Sept - probably not enough to make a difference. Avalanche danger is higher in September and late snow ( such as we had a few days ago) is more likely in Sept then early snow in April.

Which tracks /areas do you have in mind?

April should have the slightly better weather.

Thanks for your responses. I have not looked at specific areas or tracks yet. I usually go for the easy stuff, not the kind that climbs walls or crosses snow.

Early April would be good .Don't forget Easter holidays are late this year and Good Friday is 19th April so could get busy around that time.

In New Zealand we are often wettest in Spring which is September. so April should be your best time. yes the weather is cooling in April, but in September we are waiting for it to warm following the winter

Weather is wamer in September but in April you are likely to find less tourists around.

April will likely be more settled weather plus you get the bonus of the amazing autumn colours, especially around Queenstown and the nearby Arrowtown.
