We are due to dock in Lerwick on a small cruise ship on Wednesday 15th April and are wondering what birds or other wildlife (e.g. seals) we would see at that time of year. I think we will likely be too early to see Puffins, but would be very happy to be corrected if I am wrong on that.

We do not want to book a boat trip in advance in case the ship does not dock for some reason, but would we have a reasonable chance of arranging a boat trip that morning? There do not appear to be any other ships docked, but as it will be the Wednesday after Easter we are thinking there may be a number of other tourists or local day trippers around, so any thoughts on that would be greatly appreciated.

If the weather is not suitable for a boat trip, would we be able to pick up a detailed map which could help us do our own walking tour?

If there is a cruise ship in you may find that boat trips book up in advance. I would suggest contacting the Lerwick Tourist Office as they deal with boat trip bookings and will be far better able to advise than me.

It sounds as if a boat trip around Bressay and Noss may be the answer. I've found three companies who advertise and run trips from Lerwick.

Looking at the website, they take advance bookings and boats aren't that big. You would need to contact them to see what your chances are of getting on a tour without booking.

If you can't do a boat trip you can always get the passenger ferry to Bressay from Lerwick (just walk on and there are regular sailings). Alternatively go and talk to Tourist Information in the centre of Lerwick and ask their advice how to spend your time. They will have maps.
