Lerwick is a good base for all of the Shetland Islands and there will be plenty to keep you occupied for 4 or 5 nights, especially if you visit some of the other islands. You have expended quite a bit of time and money getting there so spend as much time as you can! You won't regret it.
We've spent many holidays there and still haven't managed to see it all!
You can easily explore the whole of the Shetland Mainland from Lerwick. The furthest point (North Roe) is an hour's drive from the town
Thanks guys. Appreciate your advice. Agnes
Yes, I live in Lerwick and except for exploring the North Isles(Unst, Yell & Fetlar) it's perfect for exploring The Mainland.
If you want to see a touch of the sub-arctic then while up north drive up to Ronas Hill.
There's a roughish road that takes you to what we call the Collafirth Masts(communication masts) which is the first hill and from there you get a super view of the area.
This is where most people park when hiking/exploring Ronas Hill and the surrounding area.Edited: 1 year ago
Thanks for the heads-up Hamarberg.
