Jellyfish on Naxos today

Hi all,

As a frequent Greece traveller I was surprised to arrive to Naxos today to find lots of jellyfish washed up at the main Agios Georgios beach.

One of the things I've loved about the Greek islands is the total lack of these little irritants, so quite an unpleasant surprise for me. Can anyone advise, is this normal/unusual for Naxos? It's my first trip to this island, so not sure what's the norm. Certainly not seen any on Rhodes/Astypalea this year.

I should add I was especially surprised given that I looked it up on these forums to be met with a couple of threads where basically no-one has ever seen any (or maybe one) in several decades in Greece!

I’ve seen various reports of jellyfish around Greece this year, many of the ‘fried egg’ jellyfish which are not that harmful to humans :)

There’s jellyfish of various types somewhere in Greece every year so either nobody bothers to mention it, they’re not very observant or they haven’t been in the same locations at the same time as the jellyfish 😁

Just heard from a friend who’s on Naxos that there are loads of jellyfish around - he’s at Agios Prokopios. It’s not something I’ve come across before on Naxos😳

Jellyfish are a random thing. If you just happen to be there at the wrong time the wind direction and so on.

I have been stung by jellyfish on Naxos, south part of Ag. Georgios beach, nasty little brown ones. And on Mallorca Cala Burgit, and some other bay I have forgotten, but overall quite rare. That is 3 occasions in 20 years.

Yep, it's those 'nasty little brown ones' here today, so fingers crossed they're gone tomorrow.

Still, at least they're not the occasional swarms of Portuguese Men O' War that you get in the Canary Islands.

We’ve had the small brown ones all day in Antiparos as well. Some people have braved the water but we’ve stayed out since we were surrounded first thing! I’ve never seen them before in thirty years of coming here.

Totally agree, fatcat. In all my years of vacationing in Greece, especially the Cyclades, where I also snorkel at various beaches, I have encountered maybe 2 (!) jellyfish. Just a little reason for coming back year after year...

And yes I know that this depends on the current, wind, water temperature, etc. but in Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, etc. the probability of encountering jellyfish is much higher (own experience and countless reports).

Hopefully after this year they are gone again for the next 10 years. :)

PS: No jellyfish spotted in early June this year in Tinos and Syros...

I've seen plenty around the Cyclades over the years; I'm quite surprised why so many haven't. We encountered several a week or so ago in Kini, Syros. One swam (or rather drifted) into my wife's armpit, which was a bit of a shock, probably to both of them. They are common practically everywhere, including UK waters.

Loads of small jellyfish in Agia Anna today - local reckons they look for calmer waters to release their offspring and it had been very windy for 3 days previous. Gave the local kids much fun going out and netting them!
