5 day trip leaving from Rome

We will be traveling to Rome for my husbands 40th birthday in August along with our 3 and 8 year olds. We already have a cruise out of Rome that will take us to Spain, but we would like to spend 5 days somewhere else prior to the cruise. We have been to Rome before and will spend 2 nights after our cruise there, so we are hoping to venture somewhere else. We would love either coastal or Lakeside town/ city that is kid friendly, good food and relaxing and around 2-3 hours or so from Rome. I've been doing lots of research, but feel like I'm getting so confused. Would love any advice you have on where we should go for 5 days!

August is when Italy goes to the beach, so I recommend somewhere less visited. You could take a train to Le Marche, rent a car in say Fabriano, and wander wild hills, interesting towns - and less visited seasides.

This is just one town, Macerata, near or in which you could base yourselves, above the coast.

Booking.com or airbnb would point you to comfortable places in the countryside to stay.

Or you could go straight through to Ancona and rent there (but with larger places difficulty entering with a car...

.

If you got through the airport by midday you could take these trains, no need to book,

Fiumicino Aeroporto 12:27

Roma Tiburtina 13:15 0h 48' Regionale 22051

Roma Tiburtina 13:37

Fabriano 16:18 2h 41' Regionale Veloce 2324

Buying some lunch and snacks and drinks to take on the train, as is normal in Italy.

Europcar and Avis have offices in Fabriano.

There's not a lot in English about Le Marche (good, in terms of less crowds).

Open this and other pages in Italian in Chrome browser to be offered translation.

zingarate.com/italia/marche/le-spiagge-piu-b…

google maps for broad planning, viamichelin.com for precise point-to-point road instructions.

To hasten back to Civitavecchia there is an early morning pretty high speed Frecciabianca from Fabriano to Rome

Fabriano 08:21

Roma Termini

10:20 1h 59' Frecciabianca 8851

Roma Termini 10:42

Civitavecchia 11:59 1h 17' Regionale 12240

or to Rome the evening before...
