What would be the best way to get from Rome to sorrento?
That depends on what is important to you.
If ease and convenience are paramount, a private car service. It's expensive, but again it depends on what is important to you.
At the other end of the expense scale you could take a four hour bus ride.
Or you could take a high speed train to Naples, followed by either a local train or a car service from there to Sorrento.
Lots of choices, what is best for you depends on your priorities.
you can do train the whole way , the last bit Circumvesuviana can be crowded and hot , done it with three kids , two parents and all luggage in peak season and it was busy but manageable .
Thanks for all the info.
If you are going soon you need to consider the heat. We experienced some extremely hot days in Sorrento last week. When we travel from Rome to Naples, we book seats on the fast train and a private car service from Naples Train Station to our accommodation in Sorrento. Taxis are expensive in Sorrento so it’s worth checking prices of private companies.
These companies are well reviewed:
I would take the fast train from Rome to Naples and then hire a car. We took the commuter train from Naples to Sorrento and it was awful - hot and the train they told us to get on was not correct. No one on the train spoke English and luckily someone was able to help us get off at another stop and wait for the correct train. The train didn't feel safe in my opinion. We took a car back to Naples for 80 euros and it was money well spent.Edited: 11 August 2018, 10:27
The suburban train is entirely safe. Nobody will get attacked on a train with many passengers. You have to be alert for pickpockets, but that is equally true on any Metro system in Europe.
travelgirl that was the same experience I had coming from a day in Naples. The train was late, so it was super crowded and I spent half the trip in a crouch because a baby in a stroller kept knocking into me.. (no slam against the babe, just their parents) It was as miserable as I ever been traveling. There was NO way I could have done that train with luggage. I did however feel safe.. and I had guarded myself so I wasn't too worried about pick pockets but you could see how it would easily happen crushed like sardines..
