Areas to visit around Carcassonne

I am looking at visiting Carcassonne in August with my two teenage sons. Thinking of 4-5 night stay. We love history, museums, hiking. We want to spend a couple of days in Carcassonne and then visit places nearby. We’ll be using public transport. Can anyone recommend a possible itinerary?

By public transport you will be limited. Toulouse and Narbonne are easily accessible by train.

Train network:

Bus network:

You may find the bus service so infrequent as to be unhelpful. Its major purpose is helping kids get to school.

The regional bus network is indeed very limited,

The website to go to is https://lio.laregion.fr/transports-aude-regulier

The good news is that any journey on this system costs only €1.

The little village of "Montolieu", named "le village du livre" , the books village in reason of his 16 book shops, often specialised in esoterism. They generally have books in english
