Lots of options, but which one?

Lots of options, but which one?

My family of 4 took advantage of the low airfares and booked a flight to Vancouver in mid-August. It is our first time visiting Vancouver as a family, my kids are 9 and 13. We are accustomed to taking public transportation in different cities and so we prefer to rely on public transportation to get us around town. I found a few hotels and based on their profile and cost...they're pretty similar to me. Any suggestions as to which one to avoid based on location?

Delta Hotels Vancouver - like this because it has a suite

Hyatt Regency - seems to be close to the action

Sheraton Wall Centre - mid-range

Hilton Vancouver Downtown - central location, and a suite

Exchange Hotel - like the look, also the smallest

The Listel - the cheapest

Thank you in advance!

Listel-closest to English Bay & the action on Robson St which will appeal to younger family members-countless food options as well including my all time fave right across the street (where I'm headed for lunch in an hour).

You mention the suite 2 times, between those I like the Hilton better, but it is a bit farther from everywhere (not a lot but 5 mins extra walking feels like a lot sometimes). The stadium skytrain is nearby though, so maybe that works?

If you are set on a suite, do it, you will appreciate it when you can have your own space from the kids later on.

Also consider the Landis hotel, it is a bit of a different style, but you can get 2 bedroom condos there with a full kitchen.

Things are likely to start booking up so I suggest you get on with it and don't over analyze.

Agree with Sam that the Listel is ideally located for your kids and that area of Robson St is exciting and varied. Downtown Vancouver is very walkable so any of your options will work for you. Hope you have a great time.

Thanks for the restaurant recommendation! I'll be sure to add it to my list. I'm assuming Vancouver has lots of restaurants that are gluten-free friendly?

@wrldtvler,

Thank you for the information, a suite would be nice to have especially when I want the kids to go to bed before we do. Would you say The Listel is better situated for sightseeing than the others?

Thanks JandVVancouver_BC, I also think any of them would work out fine for our vacation, and having the pool for the kids would be a bonus. Convenience is a huge factor in decision-making. I often book a centrally located accommodation when it's our first time visiting, so it's walkable and use public transportation as much as we can.

Honestly, even though Vancouver is a much larger city than Ottawa, they are similar in that the downtown cores/tourist-oriented areas are very compact and easy to get around in. Any of the hotels you've noted will put you in a good location to access things. And transit is good. The Listel is a good choice. Another option with suites would be the Sunset Inn & Suites. It's not quite as high-end, but perfectly suitable and comfortable.

I'm going to focus on location cues to help with your decision making. The central transportation hub is Waterfront Station, so a direct line or a short walk to Waterfront will greatly simplify your options for getting around.

With a family, I say look towards the West, closer to Stanley park, just because its not a close, more trees, more green space, more parks.

I'm also going to qualify my advice with a comment on the fact that I have not been into downtown for over a year now and I don't know what it looks like any more. I'm not sure if the pandemic has had significant impacts on the downtown core with things like homelessness or business closures. I get the sense that Robson Street in particular has suffered. I've heard that Yaletown has really shifted during the pandemic. Just something to keep in mind.

Cycled up & down Robson yesterday before & after lunch it's as busy as ever- the plaza by the courthouse is finished and all kinds of stores & buildings have been redone.

That is good news! I need to get back downtown. I've been keeping very close to home, or heading into the woods since March 2020.
