Vancouver opening up for Alaska cruises in 2022??
Save

Have just found out our cruise company is aiming to start cruising to Alaska round trip from Seattle in 2021, avoiding Canada, rather than the usual one way Vancouver to Seward.

As we had paid in 2018 (!) for a 2020 Vancouver to Seward cruise and also our Vancouver hotel - all currently postponed to 2022, please may I ask - how much is the lack of cruise passenger income affecting Vancouver? As you all will have lost both the 2020 and 2021 income streams.

Do you think - assuming all vaccine programmes are a success - that our cruise is likely to go ahead in 2022? Or even our paid for hotel stay in Vancouver?

Thank you for your help.

Well there's no doubt that the lack of cruise ships has hurt city economies on both sides of the country. That's a no-brainer. But no one can answer your question about whether the cruise will go ahead in 2022. The cruise ship ban is in place now until February 28th/2022. If the federal government feels it is safe to open ports to pleasure vessels then, they will do so.

The general feeling is that the borders will open in 2022. The Prime Minister has reiterated that it's unlikely the borders will open until 75% of Canadians have been vaccinated, and that the decision to open the borders will be made based on what Canada wants, not what other countries want.

As for your hotel stay, you should be staying in touch with the hotel directly.

Thank you phpr - about how much of Canada's adults have been vaccinated so far? Are you doing a lockdown as we are?

I agree with Tim, the border won’t be open this summer - heck folks in BC don’t even want fellow Canadians visiting!

By the way Tim I like the new photo 🤣

The modifications to the US Jones Act of 1920 which allow ships to bypass Canadian stops are “temporary”. In this context you need to remember that in 1914 or shortly after governments introduced something called income tax which was also sold as being “temporary” to pay for the costs of WW1.

Just sayin…….

What I want to know, is what route the cruise ships are taking? Are they going up the west side of Vancouver Island, or cruising through the Inside Passage? I've done Alaskan cruises before, and could never take one that went up the west side of VI. Too sick!

I am certainly not in a position to take any cruises to Alaska from Seattle, but in the past, Seattle departures used the west coast, and Vancouver used the Inside Passage. Just curious, more than anything else.

J0an with a zero. TA wouldn't accept Joan or JOan. I tried so many different ways to spell it. That is why I threw on a 123, figuring that TA would accept it that way. And it worked!

Glad to know that they won't be coming up the Inside Passage. Although, it would be quite something to see some of those behemoth ships cruising by from Brown's Bay!

Be interesting to see if the advertising photos, many of which show the beauty of the inside passage, are updated to show the west coast of the island route.
