My daughter and I are meeting my husband in Vancover. We get there a couple of days earlier and plan to stay in Downtown. When he arrives st 8 pm in the evening is he best to get s taxi to Downtown or are we best to meet him as we then want to get the ferry to Vancover Idland the next day and hire a car to take with us or collect at Vancover Island ferry terminal

HI

were are you staying downtown? there is a train from the airport to downtown which is likely the easiest unless he has lots of luggage. The train info is here https://www.translink.ca/Schedules-and-Maps/SkyTrain/SkyTrain-Schedules/Canada-Line.aspx If he has luggage it is a fixed rate to get downtown.

You can then get a rental car the next morning to get to one of the 2 ferry terminals. Which ferry terminal depends where you are going on the Island. www.bcferries.com and depending on the day best to make a reservation and then show up at the terminal between 60 and 30 min before departure

It will take your husband maybe an hour to come through Canada Customs and 25 minutes to take the Canada Line down to the terminus at Waterfront Station. Or he may want to get off Canada Line at either Vancouver City Centre or Roundhouse-Yaletown Station, which ever one is closer to your hotel. If he wants to take a taxi, they are available right outside the exit doors to the terminal and will cost $32, $35 or $37 flat rate + tip depending on where downtown your hotel is located. It would be counterproductive to go out to the airport to meet him. It would take you an hour round trip + any wait time for him to come through Canada Customs.

If your travel plan is similar to what many visitors to Vancouver Island do, you will be spending a week on Vancouver Island. IMO, it would be better to arrange your rental car at a downtown location on the morning you want to leave town for the Island. If you are going to just Victoria on Vancouver for only 2-3 nights, you can do that with no car. BC Ferries Connector take 4 hours downtown to downtown .

You would want to book your rental car ahead of time to get the best rate. Avis, Enterprise, Hertz, National.

Have you been approved for your eTAs yet? You will need those to be able to board a plane to Canada. $7, using this official gov't website:
