Best outdoor pool facilities for final day
Save

Hi guys,

We always like to make the most of our final day before an evening flight home and it normally includes a busy morning re-visiting somewhere we want to go back to and then finishing it off with some sort of swimming / spa / hotpools / beach depending on where we are in the world (e.g blue lagoon Iceland, hotpools in Melbourne) we are!

That way we can spend our final hours relaxing but most importantly have a nice shower and freshen up before sitting on a plane for hours!

I’ve seen a few outdoor pools in Vancouver but I can’t find out much about changing / shower / locker facilities! I cannot find any outdoor hotpools (although we will be visiting many during our roadtrip from calgary!!)!

Any info on the best place to spend a lazy afternoon followed by a decent shower before grabbing our flight back to the UK would be awesome! Our flight using until late evening so with check in times could be somewhere until 7pm ish

Thank you!

Becky

The only hotpools in the vicinity of Vancouver are out at Harrison Hot Springs - And they're a two-hour drive out of Vancouver, so not recommended on a travel day.

The two nicest outdoor pools are -

Kitsilano Pool: https://tinyurl.com/yd5sfwmg

Second Beach Pool: https://tinyurl.com/yctrgv79

Second Beach tends to be more of a "Family Pool."

Note that you don't say when you're travelling - Kits pool is closed until June 11th for renovations.

I'm trying to figure out your priorities - it sounds like what is really important to you is the changing room/shower facilities? You'll find that the outdoor public pools and city beaches have pretty rudimentary facilities. Remember that outdoor swimming is a few months in the summer so there's not a big investment there. Its the indoor pools that potentially have nice facilities.

Vancouver doesn't have any higher end, private facilities that I'm aware of, like Harrison Hot Springs or Scandinave Spa (Whistler). You can get some nice pools at some of the hotels, and so I'd shoot for spending that last night somewhere like the Bayshore that has good pool facilities.

Agree with V67 that a place such as the Bayshore would be perfect if you can manage to spend the last night there and get a late checkout and use of the pool etc. Another alternative is the Fairmont Airport Hotel which has a drop in fee of $20 and a combination gym, whirlpool, a resistance lap pool, and saunas. Not sure what ages you are (ie if kids included) but check their website. That way you are right at YVR and can freshen up and walk to the check in counters.

Another happy compromise could be Hillcrest Pool in Vancouver.

They have full men / women / family change rooms, lockers (bring a Canadian quarter) and showers.

They have and indoor family pool, recreations pools, a hot tub / jacuzzi and an outdoor pool as well.

http://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/hillcrest-aquatic-centre.aspx

Hillcrest is about a 20-minute drive from the Airport.

Note that parking at Hillcrest can be a challenge on days when there is also a baseball game next door - See the red "home" squares on the calendar -

About two hours before the start time the parking lot starts to fill up.

It’ll be early August and it’s just two adults (early 30’s I will no longer be in my twenties by this point in our trip!!!)

As it’s summer outdoors is defo the way we would like to go. We’re cool with a beach but we just somewhere to have a shower / freshen up (and we’ve never really found a beach bar a few in austrialia where you can have a proper shower!) - they don’t need to be a* quality, but somewhere to wash after sunbathing and being in salty or chlorine water would be great. Ideally a hairdryer to get the worst off this Maine of hair I have, but it’s not a deal breaker!!!

There is some good suggestions there!

Hillcrest also looks great And the fairmont at the airport would be really handy if ends up being a bad weather day and have to change our plans but still want a freshen up!

IIRC, the facility at Second Beach outdoor pool has showers. Maybe even small lockers.

This isn’t Australia, that’s for sure. :) Beach bars? We don’t have them. My suggestion is to go to Kits Beach for the beach vibe. There are rustic showers in the public facilities, restaurants and pubs across the street, and a public swimming pool, Kitsilano Pool, adjacent to the beach (also with rustic facilities).

Ok, yes, you want the Kitsilano Pool then. That should meet your needs. Outdoor, saltwater public pool, it is heated, but still cool (all of our pools are heated) and a fun beach vibe in the park that surrounds the pool. It has proper change rooms and showers.

Lol when I said beach bar. I meant we hadn’t come across many beaches with showers bar a few in austrialia 😂 reading it back I can see how that was interpreted!

But it sounds like we have a good few options here to chill and catch a few rays of the sun is out before taking a shower and heading to the airport home :(

And if it’s not a great day we can always go on some other adventures and stop by the fairmont or the leasuire center on the way to the airport!

I’ve assumed that there isn’t actually much to do close to the airport (there normally isn’t!) :)

My choice near-airport destination is the fishing village of Steveston. Usually a pretty quick hop from there to the airport and you are on the right side of the river to mitigate any delays from water crossings.
