We would be flying from the East Coast, possibly late June. Plan on flying into Vancouver and out of Calgary (or vice versa). Realizing the drive between the 2 cities is easily 10 hours, we're not adverse to it at all and would like to see as much as possible. We enjoy hiking, fantastic scenery, etc. Just not sure if we are giving ourself enough time. I'm thinking the majority of time would be spent in the Banff area.

Should we skip Vancouver and save that for another trip, maybe coupled with Portland and Seattle?

If you want to spend the majority of your time in the Banff area, then fly into and out of Calgary and forget Vancouver. Eight nights is the perfect amount of time to explore the Banff to Jasper corridor without adding getting to/from Vancouver. Plus flying in and out of the same city will negate the one way charge on your rental vehicle.

Word of warning - you best get finalizing your itinerary and booking accommodation in Banff and Jasper; its going to be a very busy summer (starting in June) and a lot of hotels are already booked solid for the entire summer.

Thank you. That's what I was thinking also.

Can you best advise how to spit the time? I'm guessing we'd circle around and fly back out of Calgary.

We're ok with staying in multiple locations for a few nights in each place.

Since Banff and Jasper are not in British Columbia, suggest you ask future questions on the Canadian Rockies forum which can be found under Alberta.

You will want to drive immediately from Calgary airport for 2 hours, stay 3 nights in Banff, explore the Icefields Parkway for up to 10 hours, with a picnic lunch, perhaps, to avoid the mediocre cafeteria with long line ups half way to Jasper, then 3 nights Jasper. Explore the IP southbound this time. Perhaps getting the chance to include some attractions that were rained out or clouded out on the way north. 1 night Lake Louise or Banff or Canmore before driving the 2 hours to Calgary Airport.
