But...the laws have changed since I last traveled out of the US. I do have a valid passport. Is that all that I need, or do I need to bring a birth certificate too? I will have my wallet that has my drivers license in it.

All you need is a valid passport. I've travelled into the states many times and all I have is a passport.

Great. Thanks so much. I keep having this nightmare that I cannot clear customs when I get to PV because all I have is my passport...

Make sure you make a copy of your passport just in case and leave it at home.

A long time ago, one of my teachers used to say, "The only stupid question is the one you don't ask". I've always thought it was pretty good advice. Something I do is to keep my passport locked up during my entire trip and I only actually carry it around when I'm in the airport in Chicago and in PV.

do you really think that I need to carry my passport when I am in Pureto Vallarta proper?

^^^^^^^^^^

That would be a big fat NO!!

Leave it in your safe once you check into your room.

You will never need it again till you see your countries border inspection agent.

Credit card and drivers license for a car rental is plenty.

Actually to get into Mexico, you only need to have your Driver's license and birth certificate. No passport is necessary. It is getting back into the US that you need a passport. One of my daughters and one of my sons came to visit recently from Canada and neither of them had a passport. They both, of course, flew direct from canada to PV.

Have a great trip!
