1st time to GDL - would appreciate hotel info.

Hello all. We will arrive in GDL 9/23, very early AM. We are keeping the bulk of our agenda open, but would like to secure reservations @ a hotel that:

* ... is within reasonable walking distance of the mercado, cathedral etc. 1-2 mile radius?

* ... has local character - thinking Hotel Frances here - old building etc.

* ... is something less than $100.00 per night

* ... is quiet/safe

* ... takes advance secured reservations.

We'll be @ this location for ~3 nights.

You can reply here - or to our e-mail: kangnampdx@yahoo.com. It would be great to connect via e-mail with someone either local to GDL or with significant experience there.

Thank you all.

Mark and Lyn.

The location of the Hotel Frances is outstanding. The rooms are okay, but the hotel ielf is very charming. I have stayed there a couple of times even though its above my normal budget.

The problem is that there have been several posting, I have read on another forum during the past year, about the difficulty in sleeping because of the volume of the music in the disco downstairs.

I don't know if there has been any change. It's too bad to see the place ruined like that. Mexicans are more tolerant of noise than Americans. The fact that their noise may be bothering someone else is thought that never enters the mind of many Mexicans.

The Hotel Mendoza is nearby. Its an old convent that has been modernized. I walked by once and was disappointed on how modern it looked, even from the outside. It is also above your range.

I have never stayed there, but I have seen the Hotel San Francisco Plaza recommended many times. It's location is five blocks south of the Cathedral.

We recently came from GDL. Originally we were thinking to stay at the Hotel Morales but when I called to make my reservation the dates were sold. I asked the receptionist for another hotel and he reffered us to Hotel Casino Plaza. We looked on line and my wife decided to book it. Sometimes I have the bad habit to check the rates on-line and then call the hotel for special promotions. In this case they had lower rates than the ones offered on-line, so we booked.

No problems to check in, new building, quiet air conditioning system, good breakfast and dinner, half a block fron the "metro" station, six blocks (5 min.) from the Cathedral/Main Square... etc.

Here is the site to take a look:

and the phone number in case you want to make a person to person reservation:

Have fun!
