Toiletries and Stationary for Locals?

Usually go to Guardalavaca and take toiletries and stationary for locals - do they need the same sort of things in Varadero as not been to this part of Cuba before.

It's not necessary to take any gifts to hand out to Cubans. Most things that are taken are sold on the black market anyway. Go into the towns and cities and you will see the so called 'poor' Cubans spending money hand over fist. The shops are just as busy as those in the UK. It really is an eye opener, trust me.

If you already have stuff collected donate to your local battered wives shelter.

They have to run from home often taking nothing with them .

It's funny how so many people think that the Cuban workers at the resorts or locals in those areas are poor and can't afford nor find those things in the shops in Cuba. Where does that crazy misconception come from? It's really on par with handing out toiletries and stationary willy-nilly to middle-class people living in their own home towns.

meinir, you really need to re-calibrate your perceptions of Cuba regarding your gifting habit.

There is a small church in Varadero, not certain if it's Catholic or the name? but I'm sure you can drop things there. It's been some time that we have been to Varadero, but I remember the church being on the main road near the Palma Real Resort so.....

Best is to donate all that stuff to a charity in your hometown.

If you do decide to bring the stuff to Varadero, as #6 posted the church is St. Elvira. The reverend is from Canada, but I think that he may have passed away; but you will find someone at the church will make sure that the stuff goes way up the country where tourists never venture.
