Got some reports of widespread power outages on the Island today, I am sure the details will be up soon.
Power is already back on.
Some parts still out Amy, Most restored about a half hour ago,
All depends on who you talk to. LOL! Power outage is not new - has happened before (but not often.)
In any event, probably not a concern for travelers not on the island who are reading this forum. :)
And most hotels have back-up generators. All will be fine. :)
Edited: 11 years agoI talked to Joseph, our friend we met at Boca Catalina today. He called to make sure we got home ok. He called at 3:00 and it was still out. He said that there was another boiler explosion at the power plant. We were there in May 2010 when the power was out for about 12 hours due to the same issue. Meanwhile I am sitting here with a fire going, can't get warm since getting home last night.
And Amy, you are probably right. It does affect those that live there much more than the average tourist although a lot of the restaurants don't have back-up generators.
Edited: 11 years agoWe lost it for 10 hours a few years ago as well while staying at a friends house in San Nic, it was Sunday and during the day so no big deal. Interested to see some post from those on vacation.
When we were in Aruba during Omar in 2008 power was out everywhere for several hours. We met a couple that was staying at the Occidental and they had no power for most of the day.
We were eating dinner at Sole Mare when the power went out...it was business as usual. The owner pointed the headlights of his car through the window, the cooking continued, our water glasses continued to be filled. All was fine.
In 2010 we had reservations at Madame Janette's when the lights went out on the island. Drove all the way there only to find they wouldn't be serving that night. Talk about being bummed, it was the last night of our trip.
Traffic was a little nuts with the lights out but the casino's were rocking.
Friends lost power for a day at the hyatt a few years back but they said, the hyatt amazing with their service despite no power...
We were on the island one time when the lights went out. The entire island was dark.
It was so Erie.
We were at the Ocean Club. Stayed in the Casino
Lights came on in 1hr.
